"RENT" Comes to Life at Dramatically Incorrect Inc.

Forget regret, or life is yours to miss.

“RENT” is coming to the stage at Dramatically Incorrect Inc. Set in 1990s New York City, RENT is a rock musical by the late Jonathan Larson. A group of struggling artists never loses hope as they grapple with money, addiction, and the HIV/AIDS crisis.

“RENT” is a show about struggle, loss, and illness. It’s also about hope, love, and strength. In Dramatically Incorrect Inc's upcoming production, they have worked together to create a moving show that highlights “RENT’s” popular songs, heartwarming moments, and a message that reflects friendship and community.

Dramatically Incorrect’s “RENT” is directed by Michelle Faith. The show has always held special meaning for Faith. Faith’s journey through theater has mostly been onstage with little directing experience. When the opportunity arose to direct “RENT,” she said to herself ‘No day, but today.’

Auditions gathered several theater enthusiasts, who shared an admiration for “RENT.” Faith said auditions were so tough as she had to choose from several talents and cast the show as authentically as possible.

“Auditions were filled with love. I don’t remember the nerves that were even there,” said Malie Marino, who plays Alexi Darling.

Once rehearsals began, Faith focused on unity and the characters’ stories. “RENT” means a lot to Faith, but it took her a bit to really understand it because there are several stories at play. Faith’s goal was to help bring a new perspective to the story.

“I wanted to make sure that audiences feel the character’s emotions, and truly see the depth of the story,” Faith said.

Lisa Symonds plays Mimi. This is her third time in “RENT,” and she is ecstatic to be playing Mimi, a dream role. For her portrayal, Symonds said she spent rehearsals focusing on her character’s emotional journey.

“I have not taken a single moment for granted,” Symonds said. “It is deeply rewarding to bring Mimi to life and share her with (audiences).”

“RENT” is known for its rich and powerful songs. Gordon Matheson (Gordon/Mr. Gray) said that the production’s song ‘Seasons of Love’ resonates with him the most. At 63, Matheson said performing in the show has been a challenge, but he has learned so much about himself.

“Being in this show has reminded me that no matter your experience, you still have to show up, be vulnerable, and serve the material,” Matheson said.

For Debi Rich (Mrs. Davis), this is her first time ever acting in a show. “RENT” was the first musical she ever saw. Rich said it has been an honor to share the stage with her niece, Chloe, who also choreographs the show.

“I hope (the show) helps us all to remember to be tolerant of others' differences, to treat everyone with kindness, to appreciate what we have, and to love without conditions,” Rich said.

Nadia Gemma (Joanne Jefferson) has described “RENT” as an emotional roller coaster. With the grim subject matter, Gemma said that the cast has come together and created a supportive environment during the process, where they give hugs and have conversations.

“If someone cannot accept you for who you are, let them go and shine brighter than before,” said Gemma. “If it's love, you’ll find a way to support each other in your own truths and through finding a middle ground.”

Audiences are welcome to attend “RENT” at Dramatically Incorrect Inc. in Leominster, MA, April 24 through May 3. Cast members warn to bring tissues, and said it's okay to have a laugh and join together as a community during the show.
