Rena Sofer speaks out

When you click on the following link please go to the Podcast with Rena Sofer which comes on after the hosts speak about General Hospital. Listen closely and Sofer seems to be implying that the CBS soap The Bold and the Beautiful has been racist against Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter Walton). The actress is telling her truth and the way she perceived events so keep this in mind.

Rena Sofer's interview is eye-opening

Sofer points out that she was on the soap for nine years and had her own dressing room while Saint-Victor who has been a part of The Bold and the Beautiful longer did not. She said dressing rooms are by seniority and it was wrong so she dropped a hint that her former love interest should now have her dressing room.

The fact that she brought it up and the tone she uses speaks volumes but to be fair we don't know how many other cast members who have seniority do not have their own dressing rooms. B&B fans do know that Saint-Victor was on the soap before Sofer who has been involved with several key storylines while Carter did weddings and handled legal work only and Rena brings this up in the interview.

Saint-Victor has not complained

Saint-Victor has not spoken out in detail on the matter so perhaps he does not see things the same way or is taking the approach of not biting the hand that feeds you. Sofer also admitted that B&B execs knew going in that the storyline with Eric Forrester (John McCook) telling Quinn to have sex with Carter had racist overtones.

There were also fans who were troubled that Carter came across as the "black stud" stereotype. There is also the incident where it appeared that Paris Buckingham (Diamond White) was going to be a “ mammy” but the idea obviously was scrapped.

Mammy Paris did not happen

The Bold and the Beautiful fans will recall that right after Steffy Forrester ( Jacqueline Wood) gave birth to her son Hayes Finnegan she and a John Finnegan were having trouble getting the child to sleep. Paris came by and began rocking the baby and singing to him and he went right to sleep.

Spoilers were saying Paris would get a new job and she did move in with the Finnegans. The way Steffy and Finn were complementing her and saying how amazing she is viewers believed she would be hired as their nanny. Watching Paris and Hayes brought back memories of movies and books about American slavery where only the mammy could soothe the child.

Thankfully the series did not go there with Paris but Sofer’s statements are eye-opening. If Saint-Victor had more seniority why doesn’t he have a dressing room and where is Brad Bell’s head to tease subtle racism in 2022? Who knows what else goes on behind the scenes that Sofer did not address?

Problems remain on The Bold and the Beautiful

Those who watch The Bold and the Beautiful have also taken note how fan favorite Aaron D Spears (Justin Barber) was finally given a meaty storyline when he turned against Dollar Bill Spencer (Don Diamont). Instead of continuing the conflict, Justin offered to serve Ridge Forrester and then was seen no more. So he basically went from being Dollar Bill's lap dog to offering to do the same for Ridge. Brad Bell what on earth are you thinking? Barber once said regarding the way B&B treats him, "It's their show."

One thing to keep in mind is that Saint-Victor agreed to the controversial storyline as it was presented to him and has remained on the show in spite of not having a dressing room and whatever issues may be going on. Perhaps this is all much ado about nothing but Rena Sofer thought enough of the issues to bring them up and fans can see for themselves each day they watch The Bold and the Beautiful.

Yet another reason for me to flat out hate soaps. With all of the complaints I have against them, the one thing I never thought would come up is racism. Now I see it. Excellent piece
