Lettered by Steve Wands

The dusty desert town of Redemption survived the apocalypse but is hanging on by a thread. A despot rules the town with an iron fist and controls its most precious resource: water. When that strongman marks her mother for death, young Rose Obregon ventures into the perilous wasteland to seek the help of the legendary gunslinger Cat Tanner, only to discover that the so-called "Butcher" is long retired, living in solitude, far from what's left of the world, and preferring to keep it that way. When Rose arrives on Tanner's doorstep, with gunmen hot on her trail, the Butcher has a choice to make: sit on the sidelines or pick up her guns and do what she does best?

The opening for this issue is great and it follows the events of last issue really well and in all honesty even of Cat doesn’t follow Rose back to the settlement it should do what she intends for it to do really well. Though lets face it, is there any real doubt that Cat isn’t going to go and help Rose’s mother and Cat’s one-time lover.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is extraordinary as we see the dialogue, the character interaction alongside the way we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter continue to flesh them out exceptionally well. The pacing that we see is superb and as takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way we are pulled deeper and deeper in this like its an oasis in the middle of the desert.

I am enjoying how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, change and strengthen. It is these layers that add the depth and complexity to the story and its how we see the past and the present come together to create the bigger, fuller picture of the lives lead and lost. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is so well achieved.

The interiors here are so bloody brilliant to behold. The linework is exquisite and how the varying weights are being utilised to create this level and quality of detail work that we see is astounding. I love seeing all the linework in the faces, the lips and how we see expressions and body language as they all work to really take the characterisation to the next level. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised how they work within the composition of the panels to bring us the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is realised so incredibly well. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masters eye for storytelling. The colour work is absolutely stunning to witness. How the various hues and tones within the colours are being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work demonstrate a phenomenal eye for how to get the most out of colour.

This is a truly engaging story, for example I wonder where they get cigarettes from, how this man whose so deathly afraid of The Butcher is able to rule with an iron fist and there are more instances but i’ll leave those up to you to decide on whats right for you and your mind. This is intelligently written with some outstanding interiors and it really makes all the difference int he world how this high quality work all around enables the reader to enjoy what’s being presented. I don’t ever want to know how the world got this way but I do want to know more about the characters who inhabit it and that’s the mark of great creators. Plus always leave them wanting more is a great motto as well.
