THE PACK IN PRISON?!

Okay, so MAYBE it’s illegal for minors to fight crime in costume, dispensing vigilante justice as they see fit. MAYBE. But not if they have a mentor! Then it’s totally fine! So now all the Pack need is an adult willing to let them do whatever they want. It’s a voyage (or at least a two-page spread) across the Marvel Universe to find a mentor! But what if everything doesn’t go smoothly? What if there’s CONFLICT and EVENTS? The Power Pack faces adversity, betrayal and more in this Alex-narrated issue!

Okay so this is a series I would like to see continue. This is far from a mainstream book even with its connection to the Fantastic Four which i’ll bring up later but they are familiar and beloved enough that they could be a popular mainstay once again. Contrary to popular belief they really aren’t kids anymore and they’ve been at this longer than I’m miss government badass has been at her job. They were and continue to be the brightest example of the next generation of Marvel Superheroes and considering what they’ve all been through, particularly Julie and Alex there really is no reason they cannot be mentors for their siblings. Also on that note with the Future Foundation and the FF themselves there should be a plethora of heroes the kids could realistically turn to “act” as a mentor.

I am such a huge fan of the way that this is being told. Ryan is constructing one heck of an amazing story here and the story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. Also with the introduction of a new character into the kids lives was not only brilliantly done but it got me, it got me good! The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way and continues to showcase the layers within the story is perfectly done. The character development is amazing and there’s one thing that stands out above all else and honestly I think Jack and Katie’s choice is one I am now dying to see have an adventure with them!

How we see this being structured and how the layers within carry plot points forward and create new layers is so well rendered. How everything is working together to create the story’s ebb & flow encapsulates just how much these kids need to have their own monthly.

I would very, very much like to see more backgrounds being utilised and a less all-ages approach to the interiors. It does make them feel younger and we all know that they aren’t. Plus Jack is becoming a man and at this teenage realm he’s in he would definitely benefit from more detail oriented attention. Don’t get me wrong the interiors are gorgeous and they would do any all-ages title proud because the linework shows strength in how its laid down. I will say this I adore the way we see the new character and that should’ve been the first inkling but kudos on how he’s presented. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a solid eye for storytelling. The colour work from Rachelle is divine. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is beautifully rendered. The different techniques we see as well show such a range and highlight her talent and eye for how colour works.

This makes me want an ongoing monthly series in the best and worst ways possible. Aside from The Champions are there any books featuring teenage characters around? I could totally recommend a few but the fact that the Powers family has such a long and storied history needs to be spotlighted once more.
