"Power Ballad" (2026) - A Heartfelt Story About Music

“Power Ballad” is a 2026 film. When washed-up wedding singer Rick is playing at a wedding one night, he meets Danny, and the two musicians hit it off in a late-night jam. Danny steals Rick’s song, and it becomes a hit. Rick feverishly fights for his recognition of the song.

These are the movies that slip right under our noses because they don’t merit enough marketing. “Power Ballad” is a heartfelt story about songwriting and complicated relationships. It’s an impactful film, but it has slow moments. “Power Ballad” takes audiences on a musical journey to fight for what is yours. 

Paul Rudd has made a compelling leading man for decades. He really took this character off the page and gave the part emotional depth. I don’t think I knew that he could sing. After being typecast for so long as Hollywood’s leading man, Rudd was ready to challenge himself. He said that Power Ballad was a break from the romantic role. 

He said that he related to most aspects of his character, Rick, like where he moved to right after his 90s breakout. Taking his character's struggles, Rick fights for what he wants, even if he wants something different for the future. One of my favorite moments is Rudd’s performance when Rick explains the backstory behind the song. 

Nick Jonas plays Danny, a rock boy singer. With his past in The Jonas Brothers, Jonas has already done the homework for a musician. I felt Jonas played a typical musician who wants fame. Jonas delivers a committed performance, but the character was one-dimensional.

Rudd said he was so nervous to work with singer Nick Jonas. The pair have great musical chemistry in the first scene. I enjoyed watching the pair talk about music and how to perfect skills. 

“Power Ballad” has several characters. I liked the supporting cast, most adding comedy to the film. Peter McDonald was hilarious as Rudd’s muddling best friend, Sandy. Marcella Plunkett and Beth Fallon played Rick’s wife, Rachel, and his daughter, Aja. They were your typical stereotypical family, though that was on purpose.

Jack Reynor has found his role as the hotheaded character, who selfishly pays attention to their own needs. He was the right pick to play Danny’s manager. 

The film was inspired by long-standing disputes that happen in the music industry every day. The film was directed by John Carney, who also wrote the film. Carney directed “Begin Again,” a similar film about the music industry. He has directed several music-based films. Carney said that music brings strong emotions to stories. 

You can tell music is Carney’s greatest passion as his strongest direction shines in the film’s concert scenes. I have come to appreciate music over time, and I felt a radiant energy during these scenes. Carney makes audiences feel the passion for music. 

Carney said that he was inspired when he saw a musician dad with his daughter. The creative lightbulb struck when he thought about how an aspiring musician would juggle family responsibilities. 

The ending felt rushed. I would have liked to have seen more of a resolution between Rick and his family. No complaints, “Power Ballad” is an enjoyable film. It has an important moral about standing up for what you love. Things aren’t going to go according to plan. What you shouldn’t do is pout about the losses. Learn to be happy with what you have.

“Power Ballad” is the film we’re missing right now. This is a good film for musicians and artists. Once it is streaming, do not let it end up in the museum of underrated gems.
