Plane (2023) Movie Review

Action / Thriller

We are currently inundated with sequels, reboots, remakes, and superhero blockbusters that rely heavily on CGI, but once in a while, we're graced with an old-school action movie that takes us back to the 80s and 90s. Back then, our action heroes were the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Steven Seagal. Nowadays, we have Gerard Butler, a man so tough that he can't decide whether he's Scottish or American in his films.

In these days of films based primarily on special effects and superhero bravado, this movie reverts back to smooth storytelling while still building the suspense. A lot is going on, but the pace is smooth enough for the viewer to take it all in. Must see on big screen to get fullest experience.

Also, the story line shows just what happens in routine airline processes, the problems with flying through a storm, and an inside-the-cabin view of making a crash landing, the challenges of conducting search-and-rescue in a thousand-square-mile stretch of ocean.

Luckily, Plane is precisely the type of film that we've been waiting for. It soars high and kicks off 2023 with a bang while providing us with a 90s throwback vibe. It's not the best action film I've ever seen, nor is it great cinema, but that's not its aim. It's a fun and enjoyable crowd-pleaser that knows precisely what it is. Gerard Butler delivers exactly what we'd expect from a film titled Plane, and there's something satisfying about how well it accomplishes this. It's cinematic fast food; it's enjoyable and consumable, but it's not fine dining.

Plane is a fast-paced action thriller that competently delivers on the formulaic tropes of the genre. While it's admittedly predictable and generic, Gerard Butler, who is very underrated, deserves credit. I've always liked him and enjoyed most of his films, and I'm shocked that he never seems to get the recognition he deserves. Butler always gives it his all, and you'll never see him sleepwalking through a film just to collect a paycheque, unlike some bigger actors. He fully commits to his roles and throws himself into the action, as evidenced by the particularly well-choreographed and brutal fight scene that appears to have been shot in one take.

The rest of the action sequences are also highly entertaining. I was also pleasantly surprised by the plane crash scene, which was incredibly intense and had me on the edge of my seat. Despite its ridiculous title, which Gerard Butler apparently fought for, Plane is a breath of fresh air. With a budget of only $25 million, it proves that you don't need a massive budget to create an entertaining film. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of these types of films in the future. So, return your tray tables to their full upright and locked positions and fasten your seat belts for a bumpy but enjoyable ride!

The film's title may be silly, but don't let that dissuade you from enjoying the ride. It's a tightly paced, action-packed adventure that delivers precisely what it promises. You won't find any pretensions or hidden agendas here; instead, the movie focuses on providing an excellent time of watching.

Moreover, the cast is strong, and the acting is excellent. The movie features great performances from a well-rounded cast that works well together to create an exciting and engaging action flick. Butler, in particular, is superb in his role, bringing his trademark intensity and charisma to the character.

Additionally, the film's visual effects are quite impressive, especially given the limited budget. The action scenes are well-choreographed, and the special effects are seamlessly integrated into the movie, enhancing the overall experience.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for an action-packed thrill ride that doesn't take itself too seriously, Plane is a great choice. It's not a groundbreaking film, nor is it trying to be one, but it's an enjoyable, well-executed action movie that's sure to please fans of the genre. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
