Phantom On The Scan #04

Aftershock Comics 2021

Written by Cullen Bunn

Illustrated by Mark Torres

Lettered by Dave Sharpe

With the body count rising – with murderers from this world and from the astral plane in pursuit – a group of doomed psychics draws ever closer to the horrifying truth about the abilities that are slowly killing them. What awful secret is the mysterious Trellux Institute Hiding?

God this is consistently one of the strongest, weirdest and most intriguing books that I am currently reading. This has this outside the box premise and it is something that takes the idea of being a psychic and adds this whole new layer to it that just makes it into something amazingly creepy. It isn’t even that it is supernatural per se but it definitely is otherworldly and to create such a vivid realisation of this for the reader to see being embodied is something that shouldn’t work as well as it does but it blows me out of the water. I do like the way that the group has started out larger and keeps dwindling down with the use of their powers and that these creatures that come out of their heads wreck all kinds of havoc on those around them.

I am in love with the way that this is being told. The story & plot develo9pment that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented is impeccably rendered. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continue to portray them as people that we can either relate to or empathise with. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we’re drawn deeper and deeper in with that innate need to know more.

I am greatly impressed with the way that we see this being structured and how the layers continue to grow, evolve and strengthen. The layers contain the characterisation, the plot twists as well as the introduction of new characters and whether they work with the main arc or swirl around it all of which add their own depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved amazingly well.

The interiors here are bloody gorgeous! The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques that we see being utilised to create the detailed work that we see is utterly phenomenal. That we see backgrounds the way that we do and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is magnificent. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The creativity and imagination that we see throughout the book is utterly marvellous and it just creates the ambiance for this type of story incredibly well. The colour work is equally as brilliant to see. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work that we see even through the darker tones is even more impressive to me. It feels like this master colourist at work and it’s glorious to see.

This is one of the more amazingly diverse books in the horror genre that stems from something as seemingly innocent as psychic abilities. That we know as much about what is happening to these folks as they do and in some cases even less is perfectly done here and Cullen really manages to create that intrigue factor within the reader beautifully. With some strong intelligent writing and interesting characterisation wrapped up in these stunning interiors really set the stage for something extraordinary.
