One Piece: RED

Welcome back to The Korner, Toei animations just released a One-Piece film titled 'RED' late in the year. You should all be familiar with the manga and anime One Piece created by Oda with over 1000 chapters and episodes, but if you aren't, this article is going to be another reason why you should.

The One-Piece story follows the Straw hat pirate crew informally knows as the 'Mugiwaras'. They journey to make their captain Monkey D. Luffy King of the Pirates, in other words the worlds freest man, in a world ruled by oppression in the form of a world government and class system that puts those of nobility also known as the celestial dragons above the countless ethnic diasporas found in the 'All Blue'.

Luffy's pirate journey set sail after his life was saved by Shanks a Yonko, which is befitting of our main character, but unfortunately this also led to the loss of his arm. Shanks the leader of the Red Hair Pirates, one of the most notorious pirate crews with a team solely of advanced haki users. Being able to see both crews in action was enough of a reason to book a ticket, well that and Trafalgar Law. Surprisingly Kolby, the scrawny marine recruit from early chapters played a lead role in the film giving it a breath of fresh air and a little order to all the pirate chaos.

The film focuses mainly on one specific member of the Shank's crew after being in the shadows hidden away on a desolate island for quite some time the adoptive daughter of Shanks and Red Hairs' musician Uta took the centre stage.

Through the course of the film, it is unveiled within a series of flashbacks that Uta was betrayed and left behind by the red hair pirates on a destroyed island called Elegia. The island was renowned as the musical hub of the era that was until Shanks and his crew paid a visit.

Honestly speaking I wouldn't be shocked if the natives held a grudge against gingers, I'd blame Shanks.

This was the start of the end. The focal point for Uta's hate towards pirates and her conflict with Luffy, resulting in a Yonko scale battle on 2 fronts involving pirates, admirals, marines and celestial dragons as well as normal civilians, a royal rumble.

Even Buffed up straw hat pirates like Sanji, Zoro even some of the 100 IQ pirates like Law absolutely struggled trying to handle Uta, because of how broken and complex her devil fruit ability/mastery was. Befitting of her name and skills Uta used the sing-sing fruit or the Uta-Uta no mi to absolutely dominate the island.

There is a part of me that wonders how much of the film did I really need to see because although I was expecting to see an action-packed anime, suitable to be called one of the original big 3, what I was met with seemed more like a live virtual reality concert produced & choreographed by Uta, which was a complete 180 in comparison to what I expected after watching other films like One Piece: Stampede.

Don't get it twisted that's not to say it didn't bang, from the composer alone Yasutaka Nakata down to the animated choreography there wasn't a beat or dance move out of place. You had to have seen the moves they had Uta hitting you would've thought she needed her idol contract renewed.

Aside from the musical aspect which is understandable taking into consideration Uta's devil fruit and her role as a pop Idol of the One-piece world, other aspects I enjoyed were the fights, definitely the fights. Fleet admiral Akainu commanded Vice admirals Fujitora & Kizaru to lead the marines against the pirates on Elegia while using the civilians as meat shields forcing Shanks and his pirates to team up although very briefly with Katakuri alongside the Big Mom pirates. Simultaneously Luffy teams up with the Koby and the S.W.O.R.D. division of the marines to assist in the battle. Thats just a few of the names involved.

The cherry on top and the most important thing I gained from this experience was witnessing in 4K, surround sound, on a silver screen Shanks using his legendary conquerors haki & Luffy gear 5 in action his Nika-Nika form even though it was brief it was very worth it.
