NYX #02

Dynamite Entertainment 2021

Written by Christos Gage

Illustrated by Marc Borstel

Coloured by Jordi Escuin Llorach

Lettered by Taylor Esposito

Nyx journeys to the realm of her father, the Mad God Chaos, to demand answers about herself and her bloodline. True to form, they converse the only way the know how--through viciousness and violence! But the shocking revelations Nyx uncovers aren’t anywhere close to what she expected and fir that matter, neither is dad! What she learns will change Nyx forever...if her supremely powerful and supremely insane father doesn't kill her first!

What an unexpected delight this issue is. I hadn’t really expected to see her and her father have some quality bonding time like this but honestly it really does go a long way to bringing us a more in depth look at Nyx. Plus what Christos does with the writing between these two is utterly phenomenal and now I kind of want to see them interact even more with one another though it really shouldn’t be in the cards. This whole issue is utterly fantastic and it is a rare thing to see such an emotionally driven issue that has such a massive impact on the reader in some extremely unexpected ways. I mean the father and daughter and their history is laid out before us and it isn’t just a poignant meeting but it is also a strong look at Nyx and what she wants out of life.

I am loving the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information are presented exceptionally well rendered. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction and how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job with their personalities coming out. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more we actually want to see.

I am thoroughly enjoying the way that we see this being structured as well as how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I am also liking how we see the layers opening up new avenues to be explored. Now with the conversation with dear old dad we know those scenarios won’t be explored but the amount of depth, dimension and complexity that we see is amazing. The way that everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably handled.

The interiors here are absolutely fabulous! The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail within the work is extraordinary. I do wish we’d see more backgrounds being utilised because when they are, they are pretty glorious and they enhance and expand the moments. How we see the composition within the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a stellar understanding of how colour works.

I think one of the things that this issue does for me is get me more excited to see the journey that Nyx is on. She wants to find happiness but with her dual nature and the sheer ramifications of half demon and half human is that even possible to find? I’ll leave that decision up to Christos but the fact that he manages to engage the reader and takes them off page the way that it does is really rather remarkable. Thanks to this impeccable writing and mind blowing characterisation along with these utterly brilliant interiors makes for an incredibly strong and emotional issue.
