Jimmy Sangster might have left Maryland for the vampire-infested city of “Killadelphia,” but there is still untold evil lurking the streets of Baltimore. The demon Corson has surfaced from the underworld to possess a once-wronged man, and his vengeance will come at the cost of humanity’s despair! But Jimmy’s former lover Nita Hawes—a woman with demons of her own—has begun a quest to root the evil out of her city. Guided by the ghost of her dead brother, she must come to terms with her own past, lest she join her brother in a state worse than death!

What an extraordinary start to a series this is. I mean I love that we get to learn about Nita, who she is, what she’s about and how this story is going to go. At the same time there is so much left open to still learn about and that’s an exciting revelation. So is the imagery on page three really takes us to a place that is so vastly different than what we see in Killadelphia as this appears to be more of an ancient demonic type being that one would associate with the Cthulhu mythology.

I’m a huge fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exquisitely. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction and as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a marvellous job in establishing the characters personalities. The pacing is amazing and as it takes us through the pages introducing the story, the characters and this world we are left wanting, wanting to see and learn more.

I am greatly impressed with the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge, grow and evolve. That they do evolve is great because it just shows how much story can be told effectively in a short amount of space. All this adds so much depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is immaculately achieved.

I am a huge, and I mean HUGE, fan of the interiors here. The imagery overall is absolutely bloody stunning to behold. The linework that we see with its varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring out this level & quality in the attention to detail is absolutely bloody brilliant to see. From the first page the tone is set for the way we’re going to see the imagery throughout the book. The use of backgrounds here as they enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring about the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is impeccably rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such a great understanding of how colour works and how to maximise its effects.

This is a brilliant book and it promises to expand the world of Killadelphia in ways that I’m not sure even the most die-hard fan of the series could possibly hope for or expect. With such strong, intelligent writing and superbly rendered characterisation alongside these bloody brilliant interiors really make this the series to keep your eye on.
