My Review of "We Have a Ghost"

If you're expecting something outside a family film you will be disappointed.

We Have a Ghost is Netflix's latest exclusive family comedy feature for 2023. I don't regularly do Netflix exclusives when they first come out but when I saw the trailer for this movie it had me intrigued. How they would go about in delivering this show was up in the air but the seeds were there and they had a lot of potential.

The movie starts out with a new family moving into a very dilapidated mansion. There are obvious red flags for the whole situation but as a family film you shouldn't really question the parents for their decision to move the plot along. It seems as though they family has been moving from one place to another due to the ineptitude of the patriarch, Frank.

Melanie, the matriarch, is like a saint to be able to live year after year of his various antics. Meanwhile there's our main character Kevin and his older brother Fulton. Kevin is an introverted kid that seems to be bullied by everyone around him. All he wants to do is play guitar and listen to older classic rock songs. This doesn't really sit well with his older brother or his father.

Fulton is razzing him mainly because he's his older brother but Frank seems to want to mold Kevin into something that he wants to be. This has created a big wall between the relationships between the family. Frank hopes to fix all of this but he doesn't ever really get to that. He's more fixated at his potential next project.

Alone and isolated Kevin explores their new giant mansion of a house and discovers an attic. There he discovers Ernest, a ghost that has been haunting the house for five decades. This is supposedly the reason why the house was sold for such a low price. Try as he might, Ernest isn't able to scare Kevin as Kevin feels as though his life is already in shambles. It in fact has the opposite reaction to Kevin.

He's amused by Ernest's antics and decides to befriend this ghost. Ernest doesn't seem to have any ill content he just doesn't know who he is and what is going on. All he knows is he's a ghost and he can't talk. Kevin then takes it upon himself to help Ernest find out who he really was and perhaps help him cross over to the underworld.

This is at its core a family friendly comedy. We have our friendly ghost and kids with good intentions. There's actually a lot of action later on in the movie when Frank posts evidence of Ernest living in his attic. This causes a bigger rift in the family and also catalyzes the plot. It brings on new antagonists into the picture and chaos ensues.

I did like a lot of the dynamics behind each of the characters. Yes they're all pretty close to one dimensional characters but they have fun with it in this movie. A ton of it is quite predictable but that's to be expected from this type of movie as well.

There were a few fun innovative things that Ernest does in some of the action sequences but I feel that this could have been a little more over the top. I think this would have added that little bit more fun to make this movie a little more memorable for everyone.

Overall, this movie does everything pretty adequately. The cast does a fine job in keeping the movie going and there are several fun scenes that keep you from falling asleep. Though I don't think you'll really remember this movie after two days. That's why I have to give this movie a 5.5 out of 10. It is serviceable but definitely not a classic by any means.
