My Review of "Vacation Friends"

An oddly fun take on a cookie cutter storyline.

Vacation Friends is one of the bigger straight to streaming movies that came out recently in 2021. The premise seems very familiar but with a different set of actors to charm us. I wasn't sure how this movie was going to go because it was a straight to stream movie but I've been impressed from time to time. Why not give it a shot.

The movie starts off with our main protagonists a loving couple by name of Marcus and Emily. They're going on vacation in Mexico and it looks like Marcus is an uptight person trying to micro manage everything whereas Emily is a straight laced person trying to go with the flow.

Obviously, Marcus has everything planned ahead and he's making sure everything works out as planned. He's constantly calling the hotel to make sure that everything is okay. It's a special vacation because Marcus plans to propose to Emily on this trip. Everything was planned to a T and it looked like it's going to be a great vacation until they get to the hotel.

The presidential suite that they were planning to stay in is utterly ruined and all of the other hotels in the area are all booked up. Right away we can see that Marcus is getting set up as a Charlie Brown like character throughout the movie. Whatever he does he's going to be on the losing end of the stick.

Despite all of his bad luck Marcus was still able to come away with a huge positive. Emily says yes to his impromptu proposal despite the craziness that was happening and another couple is notices their situation. This other couple happen to be Ron and Kyla.

They're a happy go lucky, laissez-faire kind of couple. You'll see them doing drugs, drinking and not having a care in the world. This couple was kind enough to even have Marcus and Emily stay with them in their presidential suite during their stay in Mexico.

Though these 2 couples start off rocky they eventually get to know each other and really click. Of course as many of us know, our vacation selves are always different from our Homefront selves. Once Marcus and Emily get back from vacation they immediately forget about Ron and Kyla.

That is until their actual wedding. The chaos really ensues when Ron and Kyla arrive at their wedding unannounced. There's a huge amount of chaos that happens that our newlyweds have to deal with.

What's really interesting is that the vacation portion of the movie takes up a huge portion of the runtime. I didn't really expect it to take that much of the movie. Though this portion of the movie is pretty fun to watch I thought that they would have emphasized more on Marcus and Emily's panic of the odd couple crashing their wedding.

In crashing the wedding Ron and Kyla impart on a lot of lessons to Marcus and Kyla. Looks can be deceiving and you can't judge a book by it's cover. Most of all this odd couple tries to tell the newlyweds that being genuine to themselves is much more important that keeping pretenses to impress others.

I guess that's the most relatable situation that we see in this movie. A lot of us go day to day keeping pretenses in order not to offend or make others uncomfortable. The truth about each and every one of us will eventually be exposed. If we're good people then in the end the world has a way of showing others that you are and that goes the same vice versa.

In the comedy department, I thought there were a few great laughs in this movie. There are some parts that really bomb. It's pretty evident when the movie kind of missed its mark on some of the jokes. For the most part it's forgivable since it's a free streaming movie. I wasn't expecting it to be that great but the actors were able to charm me with their portrayals of their characters.

Overall, I thought this movie is a worthwhile watch. It's a fun movie that you shouldn't look too deep into. You can have a fun time with this one and that's why I have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. If friends ask me about the movie I'll tell them it's not a bad movie but I'm not going to go out and recommend it to them either.
