My Review of the Movie 'Glass'

'Unbreakable,' 'Split,' and Now... 'Glass'

I'm a sucker when it comes to movies with action, suspense, drama, and twists within—and this movie is just that. I went into watch this movie without watching Unbreakable, but have watched Split, so I was curious to see what this movie would be like. I was a big fan of Split and had a general knowledge of the story of Unbreakable, so I had a good feeling I wouldn't be completely lost without seeing all of the movies in this trilogy.

I know I may be a little late to review or see this movie, but my boyfriend and I have seen majority of the movies in the theater at the moment so we thought we'd settle on this one.

Apart from Split, I'm not very familiar with M. Night Shyamalan movies, but this one really grabbed me. I enjoyed the color palette used within the movie. Throughout the majority of the movie, there is this air of suspense and darkness portrayed by the choice of colors and what was also great was that each character had one color to distinctly identify who is who. Another point that was also great is that they brought back the original characters from both of the movies. Without watching one of the movies in this trilogy, I found I wasn't struggling to keep up throughout the entire movie, which I really enjoyed.

To give some character background to those who haven't seen this movie, but are considering watching it: Elijah or "Mr. Glass" is a man who suffers from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, the "brittle bone disease," is considered a danger to society, and is put in this mental facility, along with Kevin and David because of how clever he is. This character is played by Samuel L. Jackson, along with James McAvoy (playing Kevin Wendall Crumb, a man with 23 other multiple personalities with one being what he calls "The Beast") and Bruce Willis (playing David Dunn, a man who mysteriously is the sole survivor of a horrible train crash and who somehow acquires superhuman strength and invulnerability).

There were a couple of things that I wish happened in the film such as more of a background story for Mr. Glass and how he got his abilities. There is a brief flashback to his childhood, a description from one of the characters on how he is different from everybody else, and Elijah's history, but it's not descriptive enough to show how he got his abilities. I did, however, appreciate how the movie did shortly go over James McAvoy's character and Bruce Willis's character histories. Another part that I wish was explained too was (SPOILER) how Elijah opens the doors and escapes his room at the mental facility having Osteogenesis Imperfecta, the "brittle bone disease." You briefly see his shadow moving and his wheelchair squeaking throughout the time in the hospital.

This movie definitely keeps you on your toes as well as making you crack a few laughs. It's got a great balance of drama and action (compared to other movies where the fight scenes are overdone and sometimes not making any sense), as well as character humor, particularly with James McAvoy's multiple personalities that he portrays. He really does a fantastic job of transitioning from character to character and still making it seem so natural and effortless.

In conclusion, I'd give this movie a 9 out of 10. I was happy, entertained, and shocked throughout the entire film. If you haven't seen Split or Unbreakable, I'd highly suggest you go see this film anyways because it is easy to understand the storylines, as well as feel like you're caught up in the film references and not struggling to understand every few minutes. I'd say it's definitely not dull or predictable and a movie I would go out and purchase to watch again and again.
