My Review of "The Lost City"

A fun exploration movie for a nice little escape.

The Lost City is one of the few bigger movies that started coming out in theatres in 2022. You can tell it was going to be a fun movie because of the actors leading the movie. With Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum you can't really go wrong. This movie proves us correct.

This movie starts off with what seems to be an adventure with our two leads. However we soon discover it's really a book that our main character, Loretta, is writing about. Loretta's an author of a famous romantic novel series. She's starting to becoming weary of writing the same type of book over and over again. With that she's kind of lost her love of writing.

It looks like this latest book that she phoned in was going to be her last because she's become fed up. Even worse is that all of the fans that come to her book conventions are more interested in her novel's cover model, Alan, than they are of her.

As usual with any book tour her manager, Beth, is pulling all the stops to rake in that cash. The first showing definitely doesn't go right because well... Loretta is a klutz. After this disastrous show Loretta storms out of the place with Alan following her. Unbeknownst to Loretta, she's being followed by some men.

Soon as you know it these mysterious men abduct Loretta with Alan witnessing the whole ordeal. Now it's up to Alan and Beth to figure out how to save Loretta from these evil henchmen.

Surprisingly this story kind of works in its own wacky way. There is a scene stealing moment early on in the movie with Alan's hired contractor Jack Trainer. This movie knows when to dial it to 11 and then pull back just so it doesn't become too outrageous.

I also like the fact that none of our main characters are really competent. Although I was hoping that they'd play the whole idiot genius thing like that of the Pink Panther. We haven't seen that sort of comedy in years. Still it's fun to see these everyday type of people trying to get out of sticky situations like they do in this movie.

The leads of course carry this movie. Otherwise this movie is simply a generic movie. The star power of the cast really does add a little kick to the fun of this movie even though I don't totally buy the chemistry between the two.

Unfortunately they didn't utilize Beth as much as I'd hope. I thought they were going to go the angle similar to agent character in Tropic Thunder. It would have been awesome if she had a bigger role because she has so much potential as a character.

Some special effects look a little out of place and that could be because film is so high resolution nowadays that you can spot issues a lot easier. I guess this makes it way more difficult for special effects people.

For the most part this was a funny movie. I had some good chuckles along the way but there are a few jokes that were kind of overdone. It wasn't totally unexpected because it is kind of a paint by numbers movie.

Overall, I still had fun with this movie. Though, I knew it was going to be a fun movie. The leads really carry this film and I'm sure the audience will have fun with them on this crazy adventure. That's why I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. Some bigger jokes would have placed this in the really good category but as is, it is adequate.
