My Review of "The Bling Empire"

I don't know how this TV series sucked me in...

The Bling Empire is a reality TV series that was just released recently in 2021. I'm not a big fan of reality TV shows except if they're for competition. Usually I can identify with competition reality shows because there's real people trying to win some sort of prize. I would kind of categorize these shows more as grand game shows rather than reality TV. This TV show is full on reality TV where it's following the lives of certain individuals. I have never gotten into anything of this sort.

It all starts with this guy Kevin. He has recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career as a model. In the past year he's made new affluent Asian friends. Kevin seems like an everyday guy but he's a model so he's not that everyday. It's him that us viewers kind of relate to because he's still has modest perceptions of the world.

We then get introduced to his best friend Kane. Here we already have a character. Not that Kane is a bad guy, he's actually a really good person. Kane is just very outgoing and outlandish. He's a great character to be on a TV show. Of course since he's rich, his tastes in everyday things are a lot more posh than we expect. Still it's nice to see someone that is that rich and still down to earth. He's willing to help out any of his friends out but also likes to joke around and play tricks on them. I can see Kane as an everyday person but just really rich.

Kane is the link between the rest of the friends and cast of this show. He knows pretty much all of the wealthy rich Asians in Los Angeles. They all tie into his social circle and Kevin just happens to fall into this social circle.

We get introduced to Christine who is the wife of a very wealthy doctor. She organizes a lot of philanthropic events which is nice. The only thing is that some of these events seem to have ulterior motives. Examples could be that they can sometimes make her look great or to help her child get into a better school later on. There's more to Christine as the TV series goes on. She's gone through some hardships in the past that get revealed.

Christine's nemesis is Anna. Anna and her have this rivalry that all catalyzes from going to a party with a diamond necklace. It sounds ridiculous but their passive aggressive actions against one another continues to escalate as the TV series goes on.

Anna is a nice woman that tries to enjoy life but being rich she has put up a guard against new acquaintances. The way I see some of the circle of friends treat her, it's a wonder why she hangs out with some of them. For example, Kim, a popular DJ does a totally disrespectful thing at her house that I don't know how Anna was able to forgive.

That's not to say Kim's a bad person. She puts up a huge guard when she's backed up and everyone's attacking her. Kim's actually an okay person. She's got her own issues that will be revealed in this show that later actually pulls the group together even closer.

Going back to Kevin, he has this crush on this girl Kelly. The problem is that Kelly is in some sort of toxic relationship with a guy. She keeps going back to him despite the fact that the guy is depicted pretty badly on the TV. We only get to see one side of this guy and it looks bad on TV.

There's a few others in this show and they add some layers to the show but they're also smaller roles in this season. Like the character Cherie who has 2 kids and is still looking to get married with her long time boyfriend. This isn't so bad in today's day in age but Cherie is traditional. In Chinese traditions it doesn't look good that they aren't married.

A lot of the traditions and ceremonies have ties to the cultures of all of the people on this show. It's nice to see because I follow some of these traditions. It's nice that they have an eclectic mix of Asian cultures into one show. They don't have all of the Asian cultures represented but that would be a huge show and I don't know if we would be able to keep track of who is who at that point.

I started watching the show out of curiosity. I have never seen a reality TV show based on a group of Asian friends. Usually I don't see any Asians on reality TV shows except for guest spots or something. Sometimes it's nice to see this representation at times.

The only thing was that I was worried that it would have portrayed Asians in a bad light. It does but it also doesn't. To have a good reality show you have to see the good with the bad and there's a great balance of this on this show. I didn't think anyone was evil or holy in this show. Everyone was nicely balanced.

However, I don't know how all of these friends stay as friends because of some of their actions in this show. I've heard before that these shows are scripted in some way and so I have my doubts that some of these people are still actually friends. They're probably just doing the show for popularity than anything else. I mean there's a person in the show that does things she doesn't even like just to update her Instagram feed.

As the show continued I sort of got sucked into it. I realized that rich people are just like everyone else. They have issues and social problems just like everyone else. The thing is that they're able to have fun with their money like we wouldn't believe. Some of the attraction to the show is to see how outlandish they can get while spending their money.

Overall, it is actually a fun watch. I hate to admit it but I'll probably watch a second season of this show. The people in this show grow on you and you recognize why they're all friends in the first place. I have to give this show a 7 out of 10. It's clunky at the beginning because you're trying to get to know all of the characters but later on it kind of sucks you down a rich Asian rabbit hole.
