My Review of "The Army of the Dead"

I get the hype for the movie but I didn't think it was a particularly amazing movie like everyone else.

The Army of the Dead is Zack Snyder's most recent movie of 2021. It's also a Netflix exclusive movie. There's a lot of hype going on about this movie because of the production put into this movie and it shows. I did however have a few gripes about the movie that I'm not sure others. Sorry if I spoil anything for anyone but I'll try to keep spoils to a minimum.

The movie starts off with a newlywed couple driving recklessly on the highway. Meanwhile there's a special operations military group driving special cargo to a certain destination. You'll have to keep your logic shut off while you're watching this sequence of events. It is after all an over the top action flick. Still I couldn't help but think that this scenario was very very unlikely as if you can't see each other on the road for several minutes.

Eventually the newlyweds crash into the military cargo releasing this zombie beast of sorts that wreaks havoc on everybody in its path. Again don't think about it when you watch this opening because technically they need this part to start off the movie. What I was thinking was why couldn't they shoot him in the head? Why would they have non experienced military men escort this precious cargo?

We soon find out that whoever this zombie beast bites they become zombies themselves and off he walks into the brightly lit city of Las Vegas. We then are treated to a grand slow motion introduction to all of the key players of the movie. There's tons of production value in a lot of these cut scenes. Generally we're being told the big collapse of Las Vegas our key players were just ordinary people. I'll have to watch it a second time to recognize who is who but the big player they highlight is Scott Ward.

Scott basically had to kill his wife during the initial zombie apocalypse in Las Vegas. He has a daughter Kate who he became estranged from years later. After the apocalypse the government quarantined Las Vegas and Scott is left flipping burgers at some diner. Meanwhile his daughter is a volunteer at the quarantine site.

A fellow by the name of Tanaka makes a proposition to Scott not too long after Scotts introduction. He asks Scott to retrieve money locked away in his casino safe. In return he and his team will be able to split 50 million dollars. Scott reluctantly agrees to this crazy idea and builds a crackpot team to go through the army of the zombies to fulfill the task.

That's basically the main plot of the movie which doesn't sound too bad for a big budget popcorn movie. It's a great concept but I just didn't like some of the logic that went through the characters in this movie. Scott's daughter Kate is a constant hindrance and annoyance in this movie. She of all people should understand the circumstances of Las Vegas yet she wants to save an individual named Geeta that was lost in the danger zone. That whole thought process was utterly ridiculous unless there was some sort of romantic relation to this character which they didn't even discuss.

The whole Geeta storyline is crazy and nonsensical. It's made apparent that they had to sacrifice someone when they go to the zombie land. Who was the sacrifice if there were so few people going to Las Vegas with Geeta? They never even explain what zombies would have even wanted with Geeta in the first place. It's implied but there's nothing really explained. Honestly, they could have gotten rid of this whole Geeta storyline and the movie would have been way better. It probably would have decreased the runtime of the movie by at least half an hour.

The rest of the movie was alright though. The Geeta storyline really got on my nerves every time because it was extra unnecessary expedition in the movie and made it run for a little too long. All of the other characters were great and seemed fleshed out. Each one of the characters have distinct personalities that gel with one another. Their motivations are well thought out.

Even the action scenes were very well done. Some of the stuff is not for the queasy because it can get quite gory. The special effects throughout the movie are pretty impressive. I did however have an issue with some of the background blurring in some scenes. Some of these scenes were a bit off putting because they didn't feel consistent to the rest of the movie. I would later find out that they had digitally inserted one of the characters into the movie. That makes a lot of sense now. The inserting of this character isn't as seamless as you might think it is.

Overall, this movie is a good time action movie. I can see why there is much hype to this movie. There are a lot of things that kind of annoyed me about this movie but it didn't totally distract me from the main elements. I'd have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. I don't think I could re-watch this movie because of my annoyance of certain characters but it was a good time while I saw it the first time.
