My Review of "Superintelligence"

An HBO exclusive movie that came in under the radar.

Superintelligence came out very quietly on HBO in 2020. I think this movie was overshadowed by the huge Warner Brothers 2020 movie deal that was recently made. It's too bad because this is a nice little comedy but I wouldn't say it would blow your mind. It's like many of the Melissa McCarthy movies of the past that we all come to love.

This movie starts off pretty innocent enough. It's this woman Carol, Melissa McCarthy's character, waking up like every other day and she's going through a few things. She's trying a new goal in life where she wants to contribute to helping the world in some way. This hasn't helped her out in the job front and her relationships.

Her best friend Dennis gets her a job interview with this woman she detests. She knows the interview isn't going to go very well but decides to do it anyways. We get our first really awkward interactions that we all know and love from Melissa McCarthy movies. She's ever so great at keeping a calm and stoic demeanor when she's going through so much embarrassment. I at least find it pretty funny the way she is able to pull it off.

As she was going about her day we realize that there seems to be some camera spying on her everywhere she's going. The next morning Carol wakes up again but this time to an artificial intelligence talking to her from all of the electronics in the house. She can't escape this superintelligence because all of the electronics are connected somehow. It's hilarious because this superintelligence character changes its voice to James Corden. A voice that analytically souths Carol's temperament.

There's a number of crazy moments where Carol tries to get away from the supercomputer but it's obviously no use. She finally concedes and realizes the supercomputer is going to be analyzing her for the next three days. It's trying to decide whether to destroy all humans on earth or not.

The whole movie is a very funny idea and it's ridiculous but that's not really what most people are here for. They're more interested in the wild antics that Melissa McCarthy is going to get herself into. There are a lot of antics and this is kind of a throwback to how she used to make movies back in the day.

It's a sweet and fun romantic comedy at its heart. If you can oversee the many holes in the story and the convenient situations she's put in you can come to like this movie. There's two officers that spy on Carol and those two have their moments. Dennis and the president also have some hilarious moments as well.

I like the dynamics of Carol and the supercomputer. Her relationship with this George character in the story is very idealistic and unrealistic but if you can get over that the movie can be enjoyable. This is a movie to get away from real life and just live in some sort of romantic comedy fantasy. I understand what they were getting at with this movie and I was able to enjoy it for what they were going for.

The actors were able to help build the characters and make them likeable. I have to admit that I'm a sucker for Melissa McCarthy movies though. She has a few stinkers in the past but for the most part I do love her comedy schtick.

Overall, if you're a fan of Melissa McCarthy like I am, you're going to have to see this movie. Obviously there will be a lot of people that just don't get it and will find too fantasy like and not really get into it. I totally understand where these people are coming from. If you're into something that's an easy watch I think this movie is alright to check out. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It's not for everyone but I liked it.
