My Review of "Stittsville on Patrol: Season 1"

A comedy targeting a very niche group of people and somehow I fell into that niche.

Stittsville on Patrol: Season 1 is a surprise series on the Bell Fibe cable network. It's not readily available on streaming when it feels like it should be. As much as I love this show I don't think it'll get too far because it's so regional I doubt anyone is going to understand some of the jokes.

This show is about a guy named Simon who lives in Stittsville Ontario. It happens to be a small town in the outskirts of Ottawa Ontario. Therein lies a lot of the jokes.

Simon happens to be a voluntary security guard of sorts for Stittsville and his enthusiasm for Stittsville is off the charts. His joy and enthusiasm of his city is very entertaining. There's this Will Farrell/Chris Farley sense to his character in the show because of how naïve and innocent he seems to be.

He goes around town ticketing everyone for the most mundane activities. You have to understand not a lot of crazy stuff happens in small towns. What makes it even funnier is that it's a small town of the city of Ottawa. The running joke amongst Canadians is that Ottawa is the most boring city in the country so being an outskirt of Ottawa makes you extremely boring.

Somehow Simon can make the most innocuous things seem funny. He has a way of overexaggerating everything any small thing that happens in Stittsville. The amount of drama he places on litter on the precious streets of Stittsville will have you roaring with laughter.

The thing is I don't know how well all of the jokes will land outside of Ottawa and its surrounding regions. There are a lot of inside jokes within this region that only people of the regions know about. However, there are a lot of other jokes that others can follow as well. The only thing is the extra punch of knowing the city will further elevate the hilarity of the jokes.

Don't get me wrong there are a lot of funny scenes in the show. In general a lot of people should still understand the jokes. You also have to consider that the series is only available on Bell Fibe so you won't have countries outside of Canada really gaining access to this show. I'm not sure if the show is only available regionally to only Ottawa and its surrounding areas either.

There is an air of claustrophobia for this TV show however. There aren't a lot of people on this show except for Simon. Anyone that is part of the show has their face blanked out (with a few exceptions for jokes). If anything its pretty much a one man army for this show. It doesn't help that he had to film this during a global pandemic.

For those that are thinking of watching it. I would say it's worth a shot. The season is extremely short as with the runtime of each episode. There are only 12 episodes altogether and each episode is around 10 minutes in length. So this is an extremely quick binge watch.

The way that it's shot kind of makes me wonder if this should have been a YouTube series rather than a bonafide Bell Fibe TV series. The short runtime and the format in which its shot makes me think this would have been better as a YouTube series. Although I have to say that it is very nice to see that Bell would support local talent to fund such a show.

Overall, I had a great time watching this show. It was really cool to see a lot of Ottawa and surrounding regions referenced in the show. It's a lot of fun for those that live in those surrounding regions. I'm not sure that this show will appeal to a broader audience outside of these regions though. For that, I have to give this show a 6.5 out of 10. I will continue to watch this show though. I hope others will find as funny as I did.
