My Review of "Someone Marry Barry"

In such a short period of time norms can change. This movie seems a little outdated but yet still relevant.

Someone Marry Barry came out back in 2014. That's only 7 years ago and yet some of the dialogue in this movie seems vastly outdated. I could have swore I was watching a movie from the early 2000s but it was more recent than that. It's a shock to see how much society has changed in such a short period of time. That's not to say this movie wasn't entertaining to watch though. If you can handle some of the not so politically correct dialogue you may enjoy this.

The movie starts out describing what a Barry is. It so happens to be a friend of theirs but they claim there is a Barry in all friendship groups. A person that is outlandish and inappropriate. Today we'd consider a person of this nature inside the spectrum of autism. I guess we're more aware of individuals that suffer these issues. They have some truth in their claims though. Back in the day we always had someone in the group that kind of fit this profile but we couldn't really explain it.

They then open up a scene to show that one of the 4 pals named Rafe had a death in his family. They're all at his father's funeral and the whole situation is obviously somber. No one was willing to come up to say some words about the father so Barry rose to the occasion to say something nice. Well, at least it seemed nice in his head. What we get is a very inappropriate story of Rafe's father. The crowd is mortified and I guess you're going to see a lot more of that in the movie.

The other two friends in the mix are Desmond and Kurt. All of the friends have their own issues that they have to deal with. Unfortunate for them they have Barry to add to their problems. Rafe is constantly chasing women not realizing it is affecting his relationship with his son. Desmond is obsessed with his work that he forgets about his loving wife. Kurt has no self confidence in himself to stand up against a woman that seems to be using him.

Barry sees all of these flaws and he confronts all of his friends about their flaws to their faces. Of course they don't really take his criticisms very seriously. In a series of misfortunes Barry massively impacts each of the friends' lives. After these separate occasions the friends finally agree that they have to get rid of Barry. Rather than telling him upfront that they don't want to see him anymore they try to help him find a relationship so that his time would be preoccupied with a love interest. That's basically the whole movie.

Although this movie is somewhat predictable I thought they were going to go in a different direction. I thought that they'd go into some angle where the truth is what we need in life but they didn't. This could have been an even more obvious approach I guess. Still the story works the way that they ended up using.

I found that some of the antics were quite funny regardless of the politically incorrect instances that popped up every so often. There still is a lot of fun to be had in this movie and it is a sweet story that people can get into. The characters in this movie are relatable but it is interesting how much has changed over the course of 7 years. Not even a decade has passed and I'm already noticing big changes in social norms in movies.

This movie is your basic romantic comedy with a twist and I guess it can get lost in the shuffle with so many of them out there. Still I thought that this movie still has its own merits that keeps it above water.

Overall, I liked this movie. Unfortunately I'll probably forget about it in a week. However, when I did watch the movie, I had a good time watching it. I have to give this one a 6.5 out of 10. It's worth a watch if you're looking for something a little zany but safe. You'll know exactly what's going to happen next and that's comforting to some people.
