My Review of "Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby"

Seth Meyers isn't well known for stand-up so I was curious what this comedy special was all about.

We have all probably heard or seen Seth Meyers before. He's a Saturday Night Live alumni best remembered for his Weekend Updates, he's hosted award shows and now has his own late night talk show on NBC. He's done real well for himself and now he's got his own Netflix comedy special.

Seth isn't really known as a stand-up comedian but if you look at what he's done in the past, a stand up special shouldn't be too difficult for him. He's written comedy for his own show and for Saturday Night Live for years. He's also had experience doing a different type of stand-up when he's done award shows and opening monologues for his late night talk show. All of this experience has surely prepared him for his own hour long special.

For the most part, his past experiences has helped him considerably for this comedy special. You'll instantly notice how natural he is onstage. His conversation with the audience is seamless and smooth. It's as if he had rehearsed his set hundreds of times before going onstage to perform the Netflix special. I only wish I could be as great a public speaker as Seth Meyers.

Was it funny though? I would say that most of it is funny. His comedy draws on his own experiences in life. He talks much about his family in particular his wife and their marriage. Seth somehow makes some of life's most banal situations funny and interesting. It's impressive that he was able to twist these boring situations into something worthwhile talking to an audience about.

Much of his jokes are very self deprecating as well. He is pretty much the same character that we know from his late night TV show. I thought that's a great thing and a bad thing. The great thing about it is that we now know that he's genuinely himself when he's doing his late night TV show. The problem with this is that we already know him so it's sort of like seeing a friend talking about themselves onstage.

That's not entirely bad because some of his jokes are genuinely funny but he talks about the same stuff over and over again that it kind of gets monotonous. I kind of lost interest when he started repeating the same jokes that he did previously but in the perspective of his wife. It was an interesting choice to extend the run-time of his comedy special but in the end I knew what he was doing. I get it, it's hard to find enough material to fill a full hour special. You may have to repeat a few things in order to kill time.

I think Seth could have had an absolutely great comedy special had he found more material to fill in some gaps. He even had a button that allowed viewers to skip his political jokes. I thought that was a really clever idea especially since some of the political jokes that he had were kind of tired as most talk shows have already exhausted Donald Trump jokes. I'm surprised he's not tired of telling those jokes as he's on every weekday telling these jokes.

Overall, I would say that a lot of Seth Meyer's comedy special is entertaining and funny but he really didn't have enough material to make it 100 percent entertaining. The political jokes were a bit tired but the whole package had tons of potential. I wish he had more material to work with. I'll have to give this comedy special a 7 out of 10. It's worth checking out. You all will enjoy the first half of the special but may switch off for the last half of the special. I hope he comes up with more material so he can have a good second special in the future.
