My Review of "Schulz Saves America"

A very short mini-series that reminds me of a series of YouTube videos.

Schulz Saves America is a comedy series by Andrew Schulz that came out in 2020. The material that is talked about is very much like a comedy newscast much like the daily show or other shows of that nature. His episodes are however much shorter and are focused on specific topics for each episode.

The first episode talks about the pandemic that we're all going through today. It makes me wonder if these episodes will be watchable years from now. Then again who's going to forget the pandemic as it's such a pivotal period in our lives right now. It will forever be ingrained in our minds for the rest of our lives.

In his rant about the pandemic he talks about the miscommunication of information from the government to the American people. These episodes are very much targeted at the American people as he talks specifically to their interests and issues. This doesn't mean that people from around the world cannot relate. Much of the information that he rants are very relatable to other countries as well. He uses other countries as reference points as well.

He not only talks about the issues of miscommunication but also talks about the various issues with the social norms of the past and how we deal with these norms during the pandemic. There is also a little discussion about the greed of corporate America that had affected Americans and their livelihood.

His second episode goes into conspiracy theories. It's a great transition from the pandemic because Americans are put into a situation where they can absorb this type of information much easier. They might themselves become conspiracy theorists themselves or join the wave of a movement. Some of the conspiracy theories have actually proved to be true during the pandemic so this ties into some of the first episode's antics very well.

The third episode talks about the Black Lives Matter's movement. It's of course from the perspective of a white man so he understands that his opinions might not be very popular. There's talk about how Black Lives Matters actually has two factions. One is the movement and the other is the organization. There is a lot of confusion between the two but ultimately he's against one of them but for the other. He also makes some points about the disenfranchisement of white men to cause even further problems in America.

This follows up to the final episode that talks about America being a divided nation. He hates the fact that the country is so divided and believes that a nation divided will fall and has full confidence that they will be able to pick themselves back together, hence the title of the special.

The whole series is really short. It's four 15 minute episodes that almost works out to be one long comedy special. He even says in the very beginning that he's known for his YouTube persona and this special very well proves it. They definitely feel like YouTube episodes on a personal channel. That's not a bad thing.

You can tell that he put a lot of thought and effort into this special. There are punchlines after every fact statement that he talks about. They're usually some sort of recurring joke with puns or play on words. He also uses a ton of pop culture references and stereotypes. I can see a few people getting offended by this special but I think that's what makes him popular. He doesn't really care what people think of his comedy and he just goes ahead and gets away with it anyways.

There is also a lot more work and effort done to get this special going. He must have had to do tons of takes to get all of this done so smoothly. I don't know how anyone could talk so fast with so many jokes without flubbing a few lines. Yet he's able to do this throughout this whole special and it's pretty impressive. On top of that they have little graphics to illustrate further what he's trying to make a joke about.

There were a few loud belly laughs along the way. I wasn't sure if I'd find this special that funny but in time I can see how logically a lot of the things he says makes sense. He has his opinion and we can believe in the same things or not. It's all part of entertainment and I can admit that I laughed at a lot of his jokes. Obviously not all of them will be funny to us all but there are a few that will make you chuckle. I only wish that this was done to an audience, it would have felt even better.

Overall, I thought this was a comedy special that we need right about now. It's pretty well done and I think he could very well have a recurring special with Netflix if he can keep this up. Again from the looks of it, there must have been a lot of time and effort done to get this just right. I have to give this special an 8 out of 10. It's a really easy binge watch because all of it will probably take you less than an hour to watch.
