My Review of "Schooled: Season 2"

The Goldbergs' spin-off has finally found its legs. It feels just as enjoyable if not more enjoyable than the Goldbergs.

Schooled had a bit of a stumble at the very beginning. It didn't know what it wanted to be at first. I'm glad they figured out what they wanted to do with the series by the midpoint of season one. This season seems to run with that direction and further explores the possibilities for the show.

I had watched an early pilot of this show back in the day when they focused on Glascott and his neice. They quickly changed this to focus on the Lainey character from The Goldbergs. She was a friend of Erica and was once engaged to Barry.

At first the likelihood of this situation didn't quite make sense. Why would this rebellious girl come back to the same school she went to in order to teach music? I eventually fell for it by the end of the first season.

They have a few strong characters in this series with C.B, being a geeky goody two-shoes. Then there's coach Mellor who has always been a popular character in The Goldbergs. Glascott was also a very popular character in the Goldbergs, in this series he's been promoted to principal. I also love Wilma the science teacher. There are a few recurring characters that are also a shining light to the series. As much as the teachers are the stars of the show, some of the students also play strong roles in keeping the comedy coming.

Schooled is very much a series about the complicated lives of the faculty of the school. They build a family like relationship with one another and we really feel like they care about each other. It's definitely a different perspective that we don't usually explore in sitcoms. I know there have been a few teacher sitcoms but this has the TGIF feel.

It's also based in the 90's. All of the satire and play on trends that we recognize from The Goldbergs come back into play with 90's references in this series. Those that love The Goldbergs will probably feel at home with this series. I had a little worry for the series because they included some of the characters from The Goldbergs to guest star in the show last season. Usually when they do that it's an indication that the show may have needed help to boost ratings. There wasn't any need for that in this season.

The characters in this season feel very fleshed out. If you've been following the series you'll already feel at home with all of the characters. It's a lot more fun because when I watched it I knew the dynamics of the characters and knew how they'd react to the situations that the show puts them in. This way the show can put them into bigger situations without worrying about explaining the character's motivations for their actions.

One of the big running story-lines is the love triangle of Lainey, Barry and C.B. They did a really good job in making us like all of the characters. This makes it difficult for not only the characters but for the audience to figure out what outcome we want. I have to say that some of the story is a little forced though. We've seen this type of story-line in Friends, Cheers, How I Met Your Mother and Frazier for the longest time. I guess the 20's need their own will they or won't they story-line. Each generation needs one but I don't think this show is big enough for everyone to be talking about. Who knows if any show will hit the same heights as older sitcoms.

Still the characters in the show really draw me in as an audience member. I love all of the characters in this show because they're all so endearing and charismatic. They're all such great people and they just want the best for everyone. This is why some of the decisions that they have to make are sometimes pretty difficult.

Overall, I am really growing to like this show. Close to the end of this season I was all in. In fact I started to like this series more than The Goldbergs closer to the end. I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. I can't wait to see the future of this series and I hope they continue to elevate as they're currently doing.
