My Review of "Saved by the Bell (2020): Season 1"

A very self aware revamp of the old TV series which is remarkably fun to watch.

Saved by the Bell (2020): Season 1 was a bit of a shock to me. I had thought all of the old actors that played the original actors have gone on to do bigger and better things now. Remarkably some of them are actually present in this new season and we get to see some cameos. As a person that used to watch this TV show back in the early 90s I had certain expectations. For the most part this series delivers.

This season starts out with Zack Morris. For those that don't remember, Zack was the main protagonist of the original TV series. He's now the governor and he's a bit of a jerk. Then again technically he was always a jerk in the original series. He's now married to his high school sweetheart Kelly Kapowski. They're living the high life now and are oblivious of things with their wealthy lifestyle.

As governor, Zack makes some cuts funding to some schools. One of the schools he cut had to close down because they didn't have enough funding. Now the kids from that school have to go to Bayside, Zack's alma mater. The problem with this is that the kids from the school that closed down are of lower economic stature and they feel uncomfortable being with the rich snooty kids of Bayside.

This time around this TV series centers around Daisy. She's from the old school that closed down and she's a go getter. The problem is that she sees all of the inequalities that the students at Bayside take for granted. She works her hardest to overcome obstacles so she and her fellow classmates can thrive in the future.

Daisy's best friend is Aisha and she's also aware of the inequalities but but she's a little more nonchalant about the whole situation. Things somehow fall her way for some reason. She's an athlete so popularity is pretty easy for her to obtain.

They have only one other character from the old school that is part of the group and that's Devante. He's a big guy that they stereotype to behave a certain way but there's actually more to him than they anticipate.

For the Bayside kids there's Mac who's the son of Zack and Kelly. He's very identical to Zack of the older days but with a lot of money. His cartoonish antics are pretty funny because it's so absurd how little empathy he has for people.

Then there's Lexi who's a ridiculously opportunistic girl. She's got a heart in her but doesn't want to show it. Her character is absolutely hilarious as well in the same way that Mac's character is funny. They're actually very identical characters but done in different gendered perspective.

Finally we have Jamie who's actually Jessie Spano's son. You'll remember Jessie because she's one of the original characters from the original show. Now she's a school councilor. Her son Jamie is a stereotypical dumb jock but there are moments when you can see that he's aware of what's really going on.

The only other recurring original TV character is A.C. Slater. He's the gym teacher of the school. This made a lot of sense as he was always the school jock in the original show. It was kind of a shock that A.C. never continued his relationship with Jessie but you can see that they might be playing this storyline later on as the series progresses.

This show is very aware of what it is. It pokes fun of some of the original storylines of the old show and at itself as a young adult comedy. I particularly laughed at one of the jokes when they had senior citizens playing high school students and only Aisha was aware of how old they really were.

The antics on the show are very on brand with the old show but with a new twist. I love the fact that they took this approach because the new generation can still have fun with it and understand why we liked this show so much in the 90's.

Overall, I loved this season but I was really disappointed it was only 10 episodes long. Each episode was only 30 minutes long so it's easy to binge watch the whole season. For some it'll be a guilty pleasure. For me I think it's a fun show that I wouldn't be embarrassed to say I like. I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. It's great for what it is and they know what they are. I urge fans of the old series to watch it. You will fall in love with all of the characters.
