My Review of "Parasite"

The movie that everyone's talking about. Did I think it lived up to it's hype?

Parasite has been talked about by a ton of people despite being Korean. I found that particularly interesting because I've never heard so much buzz for a non-European language movie since Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It's a breathe of fresh air for Asian cinema because it delves not in a historical or fantasy based story. It's a well polished modern story!

This movie is about two juxtapositioned families. One family is extremely wealthy whereas another family is the polar opposite. You'll notice that the rich family doesn't have a care in the world but are paranoid about the help they hire. The poor family worries about everything and are willing to cheat in order to survive.

The son of the poor family miraculously gets the opportunity to work as a tutor for the rich family's daughter. Obviously his credentials are doctored so that he can get in. The poor family quickly weasel their way into a number of other employment opportunities within the rich family's household. The sister becomes a tutor for the younger boy. The father becomes the rich family's driver and the mother becomes the house caretaker.

This movie was extremely clever in the way that the poor family con their way into the rich family's household. You can see an air of naivety when it comes to the rich family. They just want the best for their family and they don't realize what's really happening. I guess the parasites in this case is the poor family.

The questions start to form later on in the movie. You start wondering is the poor family really the parasite in this case? There are a number of twists that come to play in this movie that makes you really wonder who the real parasites are.

There are also questions of what money does to people. You don't really see the rich people doing anything wrong yet are they really the enemy? Or is it the poor people really the enemy as they are willing to do pretty horrible things as a result of having to fend for themselves? Some of the horrible situations that happen in the movie are quite avoidable but each of the characters are finely fleshed out.

They also ask whether we should plan things out or just let things play out. There is a little bit of a moment when a character almost gives up because things just seem to be falling apart at the seams. It represents the struggle that some of us go through everyday. We will see how doubt and optimism come into play in this movie.

We see the motivations of each of the characters. No one is really wrong for the things that they do. Well some of them are wrong for what they are do but we as the audience understand their motivations. The direction was well done because there are a lot of characters and yet the audience feels that they know each and everyone of them well enough that we'd know how'd they act and react in the scenes to come.

The scenes to come are escalated very quickly. This movie goes from 0 to 100 so fast you don't even realize it's close to the end of the movie. There are genuine thrilling moments that will keep you at the edge of your seat. These moments are so close to horror scene moments that you may even cover your eyes when the scenes arrive.

Overall, I thought it was a thrilling ride that will get your heart pumping hard by the end of the movie. I for one thought it was a little too intense for me but I now understand the hype that surrounds this movie. I will have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's not particularly a movie that I would re-watch over and over again but I can definitely understand why people think it is a masterpiece. The movie was constructed so well and told so beautifully that I didn't even notice that I was reading subtitles in a Korean movie.
