My Review of "Obi Wan Kenobi"

We kind of know how it ends but it's still fun to watch what happens.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has just finished up on Disney Plus. It's a very short mini-series that only lasts 6 episodes. They might as well have been movie trilogy with the run time to finish this. Although we all ultimately know what happens with these characters we're still drawn to them due to their pop cultural significance.

The series starts off with a little recap of what had happened from Star Wars episodes one through three. Basically there was that big fight with Obi-Wan and Anakin resulting in Anakin joining the dark side. Unbeknownst to Anakin his daughter and son have been separated so that he cannot find them. I still find that a little weird since they're supposed to be so force sensitive to the universe.

Jedi's have been outlawed due to Order 66. In the first episode we get absorbed into the atmosphere. Jedi's are still being hunted so they've gone into hiding. They're still around and it's tough for them because they have good hearts. This basically means the empire doesn't really have to do too much to hunt them. Jedi's will show up to save the day if something bad happens. When that happens you better believe the empire will be there to pick them off.

We get introduced to these inquisitors. They're out hunting Jedi but the biggest Jedi that they're really hunting down is Obi-Wan. No one has seen or heard from him for years.

Things don't really kick it up a gear until we get introduced to princess Leia. She's a little girl with a lot of spunk. Unfortunately she likes to go wandering a lot. It's probably due to the fact her parents understand how important it is to keep her away from everyone. they don't want Darth Vader to find her.

One day she starts wandering around and due to a series of events there are some people that kidnap her. Obviously their parents are mortified and they don't know anyone else to turn to other than Obi-Wan.

This basically brings Obi-Wan out of the shadows so that he can save the princess and bring her back to safety. The problem is that the inquisitors are onto him and things start getting really dicey from there on for him.

It's real fun watching these characters in their younger years but there's no real sense of urgency since you know that they'll live to tell their tale. There's also no major injuries either. The movie does a good job in trying to keep the tension up even though we know nothing's going to happen to these characters. We do sometimes ask how did they get out of that though.

I think that a lot of Star Wars fans will be able to pick up on a lot of fun little things that they added to the movie. There are nuanced little things that they added that I'm sure only the hardcore will understand. I guess that goes with any call back series or movies.

They also did a good job in keeping the aesthetics of the series in sync with the older movies. There is a believability that this had happened between episodes three and four. This is the first time they're using an existing character from the movies as a main character rather than adding them to add a little flavor to the series.

The Mandalorian and Boba Fett work well because they're not really attached to the main movies so they have free reign over what happens to their characters. In this movie the filmmakers don't have that same artistic freedom. So I sense that they had some handcuffs to their creativity.

Overall, I still liked this series. Fans of the original series should have a good time with this one and will probably get more out of it. Casual viewers will like it because we just go with what's in the show. We don't really know if there are any plot holes this series might be creating. I have to give this mini-series a 7.5 out of 10. It's fun but I don't know if I'd watch it over and over again.
