My Review of "Mr. Mayor: Season One"

A pretty funny concept and for the most part it worked for me.

Mr. Mayor is a new comedy TV show that came out early 2021. It was a very short season with only 9 episodes. However, the amount of fun that they were able to pack into those 9 episodes was truly impressive. I really hope they will get picked up again for a second season.

The concept of Mr. Mayor is actually quite simple. It's about this very old school retired business man by the name of Neil that gets elected as the mayor of Los Angeles. Neil has to navigate his popularity while learning the ins and outs of social norms of a modern Los Angeles.

I don't live in Los Angeles so I don't really know if the stereotypes that they're portraying in this show are accurate or not. That's not to say I can't enjoy them. It's sort of like Parks and Recreation and Portlandia where the city has its own personality that the audience has to adjust to.

In this modern Los Angeles Neil has to circumvent around various politically correct scenarios despite what his politically incorrect mind thinks. To help him learn societies new social norms are his political advisors Tommy and Mikaela. They're constantly trying to extinguish the fires that Neil starts. Neil also has his daughter Orly to help him with his moral compass.

Then we have Neil's polar opposite coworkers, Arpi and Jayden. Arpi is a socially conscious co-worker that wants to do what's good for society and the environment. Jayden is a lovable idiot that gets himself into trouble.

These two characters cause Neil a lot of trouble because they either figure out problems that Neil has to steer around or they exacerbate the situation. It's sort of a love hate situation with Neil and these characters because Neil can't really do his job properly without them at the end of the day.

The writing is pretty quick paced. It's sort of like that 30 Rock momentum of jokes. A lot of the jokes can be coming at you a mile a minute but if you get them they hit you hard.

All of the characters are quite likeable as well. I like the fact that it doesn't always focus on Neil all the time. Each of the characters have their shining moments in this show. In certain episodes they'll focus on some of the smaller characters and it helps because it gives us more connection to them when they next connect to Neil. We understand more of where they're coming from and what their motivations are.

This show also plays on some of the stereotypes that you may have about certain things. Sometimes things aren't as simple as they seem and at times they will look at those situations from different angles that I never thought of which was a refreshing. It helps me understand where these other opinions come from.

The only thing that I worried about for this show was that it was a really short run and that it wouldn't be coming back. Fortunately I read that they've been picked up for a second season. Hopefully that season will be a little longer than this one.

Overall, it's about the entertainment factor of this TV series. I found that this season was really entertaining. It has a lot of familiar elements that we have seen in other comedies. However it's got a good enough twist that I'm willing to go on the ride. That's why I have to give this season a 7 out of 10. I'm sure a lot of people will understand the humor if they have seen 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt.
