My Review of "Modern Family: Season 1"

A crazy extended family that has all sorts of perspectives.

Modern Family is about a large extended family. Each part of the family has some nuance to them that makes for some fun and interesting jokes. I like the variety they provided for each of the families as they bring in a nice twist to the perspectives that we might not see ourselves.

The patriarch of the family consists of a senior citizen by the name of Jay. He's very politically incorrect and gets away with some inappropriate actions because we know what generation he had come from. He had separated from his first wife to marry Gloria.

Gloria is a beautiful Colombian woman that is much younger than Jay. She is very open but wears her heart on her sleeve. She's a great person but I guess some people frown upon her because of her situation with Jay. She has a son, Manny, from a previous marriage.

Manny is an old soul in a little kid's body. He's put into a precarious position because Jay's two children are about the age of his mother Gloria. Legally he is Jay's offspring's brother in law.

Jay's daughter Claire is kind of a would up person that needs to have everything perfect. She is very caring but has a tough time keeping her three kids in place with her man-child of a husband Phil. They have two daughters, Haley and Alex. One is a pretty popular girl and the other is a pretty nerdy girl. Their brother Luke seems to be a child with a learning disability.

Jay's son Mitchell is married to his husband Cameron. They had just adopted a daughter from Vietnam. It seems as though Jay is still going through a lot of adjustment of having a gay son. Mitchell seems to be going through some challenges of his own attempting to gain his father's acceptance.

Most of the stories target Claire and Phil and their three kids. The other families either add to their story or have stories of their own that will eventually interact with Clair and Phil's story.

With so many characters I can see how this series can have longevity. They come up with a lot of stories that aren't generally explored by a lot of family sitcoms that have come out in the past. To add to the mix each of the characters have their own zaniness that are eventually unveiled as the season progresses.

I found a lot of fun watching this extended family and their interactions with one another. It does seem that the family is just starting to get to know each other all over again. This is more apparent when they start pairing up some of the family members that we don't normally see with one another. That's part of the fun with this season. I liked that they had odd coupling.

There were a lot of jokes that pertained to one character's understanding of something only for it to mean something else. They did a good job in fleshing out the characters because it becomes second nature for us as the viewer to assume we know what the characters are thinking. The misunderstandings soon become a case of dramatic irony as the show's audience is the only ones that know what's really going on.

Overall, for a first season it was very well done. They surprisingly had a ton of star cameos in the first season. I can't wait to watch through the next season. I have to give this season an 8.5 out of 10. It is definitely re-watchable and fun for almost everyone. If you're sensitive to political correctness I would say stay away.
