My Review of "Lucy In The Sky"

Is this a movie about a different sort of PTSD or is this about a sociopathic individual?

Lucy In The Sky came out of nowhere. I had never heard of this movie when it first came out in 2019. It has some pretty big stars and high productions but I wasn't even aware of it until it came out for streaming. It's a movie based on true events of astronaut Lucy Cola. What we got was a deep study into her motivations of extreme actions.

This movie starts out with Lucy out in space. She's out in the infinite abyss and is having the time of her life. Wowed by the vastness of space, she eventually has to come back home.

When she finally gets home she realizes that things just aren't the same even though everything is exactly the same as it was before. She finds everything boring and mundane compared to what she had just experienced. This is a fair assessment since not a lot of people have ever been to space. It's sort of like people that take trips to another country and talk to their friends that have never been anywhere. They kind of become a little stuck up thinking their more worldly than everyone else.

Needless to say this is a strain on her relationship with her husband Drew, her nana and her niece Iris. She's sort of distanced from everyone in her previous life. Her new ambition is to go back into space. That's all she can think about and she'll do anything in order to get back there.

During her training she meets up with a fellow astronaut Mark. He shows her some interest. He and his friends have all been to space and they all talk about how they want to go back into space. It really reminds me of people that travel. They all talk to each other like a special group and talk about how they want to go back to where they were.

So Lucy starts developing feelings for Mark as he talks to her as if he understands exactly what she's feeling. It doesn't hurt that he's the heartthrob astronaut of the group. Once this relationship begins things start to spiral out of control. Truths start coming out and we learn more about Lucy's past and what motivates her to be who she is.

In the beginning I started to think that maybe it's a different kind of PTSD. The other astronauts claimed to have the same experiences as Lucy. Mark had also mentioned that his marriage had broke apart not too long after his first flight to space. When someone goes into space do they have a wandering mind trying to get back into space?

Then I thought, of course they do. It's the same feeling as people that go travel around the world. It's called wanderlust. People get the traveling bug and they want to continue to explore new places once they see a new place. Not everyone but a lot of people have this bug when they go places. I haven't been to space so I don't know how bad it is.

The more we learned about Lucy I started to feel as though she was reacting the way she was reacting because of her broken past. She didn't necessarily have the best childhood and always did the right things and then when the one thing that she obviously deserves gets snatched from her yeah she's going to go crazy. Then I thought, how much is too much? Don't you have to think to yourself and realize you're going to far? Or has she been a sociopath her whole life and we're just realizing this now? There are so many questions that come into mind.

It's a pretty interesting character study of Lucy's character and I'm sure a lot of people will be wracking their brain trying to figure it out. Then again it's not exactly a very easy watch. Lucy is kind of a deplorable character at times. Some people can't deal with all of her actions and it does get pretty messy especially as the movie progresses. For most of the movie I didn't really like her character even though I had some sympathy for her closer to the end. I do understand where she's coming from though.

Overall, this movie isn't for everyone. It can be difficult to watch because Lucy is not a nice character but she's this way because of her past and you'll learn to realize this. I feel like a lot of people will not be able to get through the first half of the movie but if you do, you might be able to enjoy the rest of the movie. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It was an okay viewing for one time only. I wouldn't want to watch this movie over again, it's too difficult for me.
