My Review of "Love and Monsters"

After watching this movie I think it could be considered the Zombieland of the 20's.

Love and Monsters came out in 2020 and not a lot of movies were coming out at this time. It was a time when all of the big studios held back their big releases and we were desperate for good content. That's why I'm so impressed with the quality of this movie. However this movie does remind me of Zombieland that came out back in 2009. This movie just speaks to a new generation of kids.

The movie starts off by explaining the backstory of what had happened to the world and why our hero Joel is in the situation he's in now. Basically there was a gigantic meteor that was hurling away at Earth. In order to destroy the meteor all of the nations around the world fired their weapons at it.

Fortunately the weapons were able to destroy the meteor, but there were dire consequences for their actions. Some sort of mutation dissipated into the earths atmosphere and affected Earth's ecosystem. This caused a lot of the animals on earth to grow into fearsome beasts.

These monsters quickly took over the Earth's surface. 95% of the Earth's human population was eradicated leaving the remaining survivors to live underground or in bunkers.

The telling of Joel's story starts off 7 years after the Monsterpocalypse. Funny enough Joel doesn't really live a bad life. He actually likes the people he's bunkered with. His life is pretty good but he longs for a romantic connection. Just before the Monsterpocalypse he was a teenager with a loving girlfriend. Seeing all of his bunker roommates in loving relationship has made him miss his old girlfriend Aimee.

He continues to write letters to her and by chance finally found out what bunker she lives in. It's quite a trek to get there and unfortunately he's still very sheltered to the monster world. He freezes when he's in fear and this has proven to be a great liability for the rest of his bunkmates. That's why he has been on any hunting or outside adventures.

One day Joel finally puts it upon himself to go on an epic trek to find Aimee. He will risk his life to get to her bunker and if he doesn't make it so be it. Sounds really brave when you consider he's got no outdoor experience at all. He's like a child taking a leisurely walk in a warzone.

Luckily for Joel he meets up with some friendly people along his journey and learns a lot of things to protect himself on his way. It's very reminiscent to the movie Zombieland. He learns of specific rules along the way that he has to follow and the movie is fairly consistent with these rules throughout the movie.

I like how they add a few of the twists and turns throughout this movie. Though they are a bit predictable they are cleverly written in there to make sense with the Joel's whole trek through the land of monsters.

There are many clever messages sprinkled throughout the movie. Whether it's talking about our goals in life or even our relationships with one another. The biggest message is not to be fearful of going out there and exploring. A lot of us live in lives where we are stuck with comfortable. One of the repeated phrases in this movie is not to settle even if it's the end of the world.

This movie is trying to push people to see what they're capable of and surprise themselves. Sometimes we do often think things are impossible but we won't know unless we try. They also repeat the notion that not everyone has great instincts but we learn from our mistakes. So maybe we shouldn't be so worried about screwing up.

Some of the special effects in this movie are really well done. It feels like a bigger blockbuster movie than a straight to video on demand movie. That's a welcome change to the mediocre movies that we've experienced throughout 2020.

Overall, I think this is a really good movie. It's catered to entertain the whole family as it has fun jokes for everyone in the family. I am probably going to check this movie out again in the near future. With this I have to say that this movie gets an 8 out of 10. It is a movie that I will definitely be recommending to people.
