My Review of 'Lion'
A surprising movie that I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did.
Surprisingly, Lion is based off a true story. It's a biographical story of Saroo Brierley, played in the movie by Dev Patel. The crazy things that happen to Saroo seem so crazy that even I was questioning if they could have actually happened in real life. They were depicted well enough for me to believe that they actually happened though. It's sad to know that some people have to suffer as much as some of the people in this movie have.
It all begins with Saroo as a child in India. He lives a simple life with his mother, his younger sister and his older brother. They are extremely poor and they have to do some pretty interesting things to stay alive in those conditions. His brother is protective of him but Saroo always wants to help the family the best that he can.
One day Saroo's brother has to do a job to help support the family and against his wishes Saroo tags along. The older brother doesn't want anything to happen to Saroo so he tells him to stay at the train station until he's done his shift. He'll come and pick him up afterwards. Saroo obliges but because he's a little boy he goes off wandering into a train. He falls asleep while the train travels across India.
Since India is so large with so many people Saroo is lost. He gets into crazy situations that I won't get into but eventually gets adopted by a foreign couple from Australia. This loving couple adopted two Indian boys and man the movie really picks up from there. Saroo never loses hope of finding his family and the movie describes his crazy journey.
First off this movie is an emotional tour de force. It's all over the place, making you happy, sad, angry and sympathetic. You'll be put through so much watching this because it is a pretty heavy movie. To add to the mix the cast does a pretty good job in keeping the audience engaged and emotionally invested into the characters. I didn't think I'd be so absorbed into this movie but it was well written and acted. This crazy combination had be immersed into the movie.
It also helped that there were some pretty great cinematic shots of the movie. There's great visuals of India and Australia. It almost makes me want to check out these places. There was a little CGI added close to the end of the movie that I thought was kind of out of place but for the most part this movie was really well shot. You can tell a lot of thought and effort was made into the look of each of the scenes.
Some of the atrocities that happen in the movie are terrible but in the back of my mind I kind of know that they probably actually happened. There are people in the world treated the way they described in the movie and it's horrible. This movie also plays a little social commentary to the audience about the way some of the children in India are treated. It's very unfortunate but I hope we can do better.
Overall, I thought this movie was really entertaining and enthralling. There were a few scenes that dragged a bit and so the movie can feel a bit long at times. It's also a pretty heavy movie so those that aren't looking to feel that much emotion during a movie might want to stay away from this one. I still have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's a really well made movie and I thought that they did a really good job telling the story.
