My Review of "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword"

This movie is so epic! Why do I not hear about it more often?

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword came out back in 2017. I remember seeing it back in the day and liking it. The problem was that I don't think people liked it that much so it doesn't get talked about that often. It's actually a pretty big shocker when I revisited this movie recently. After seeing it again I'm kind of curious why it hasn't caught on by now.

The movie starts off with an epic battle. It's based in an ancient magical version of England. They have gigantic elephants destroying the kingdom. Mages with mystical magic are attacking the kingdom and all seems to be at a loss. That is until the king Uther comes into battle with his mighty Excalibur. He pretty much demolishes everything in his way and destroys the evil mage wreaking havoc in his kingdom.

Little does Uther know but his brother Vortigern has been secretly trying to usurp his leadership role. In doing so, Vortigern has to make a deal with some sort of demon. He has to make an ultimate sacrifice but it works. Through a huge tussle between brothers Uther's son, Arthur, luckily survived in a little boat headed to Londinium.

Arthur is then discovered by a local prostitute and raised in her brothel. There he grows up to make many friendships and learn invaluable skills along the way. Eventually he starts to make a name for himself.

Now Vortigern knows that his nephew is still alive and the demon confides in him that his nephew is the only one that can ruin his stature. Paranoid about the whole thing, Unbeknownst to Arthur, Vortigern decides to have some sort of witch-hunt to get rid of his pesky nephew.

Basically from there on the adventure really ramps up because Arthur has to discover who he really is and learn to accept who is as well. He realizes this heavy burden that he will eventually have to take on if he does take on the role. That's why he's so hesitant to be who everyone wants him to be.

Stylistically this movie is amazing. There are so many great artistic directions with this movie. The music, the set pieces all the way to the costumes and creatures are very well done. They really made a world of its own and it's for the most part very consistent with one another.

All the montages and explanations are done in a very slick way. It's very fast and high paced and the pacing of the movie never really lets down. There's something always going on. Even explanations of things are done in a way where there is some sort of scene jumping where the movie aids us visually to see what they mean.

I also like the themes of the movie. It's funny because Vortigern essentially could have become all powerful without having to deal with Arthur at all. The movie even tells him this. His own desire and lust for power has made him paranoid enough to ruin his own ascension to power. Arthur never knew his lineage. It was actually Vortigern that revealed to Arthur what was actually going on.

Although everything is in some sort of fantasy world there are still repercussions for all of their actions. Everything still has some sort of balance in this movie. I liked that there was always a yin to every yang that was going on in the movie. There was some sort of harmony to the story with this factor.

Overall, I was shocked at how much I still enjoyed this movie. It is very fun and entertaining. If you're into fantasy movies you'll love this one. I was actually hoping that they would be able to continue this franchise because I kind of wanted more at the end. There is no cliffhanger ending but I do want to see more adventures with these characters. This is why I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It is a very rewatchable movie and you should check it out if you haven't seen it already.
