My Review of "Kajilionaire"

An interesting concept to a movie. Even more interesting is the way that they keep you questioning what's going to happen.

Kajilionaire was a movie that came out in 2020. It came out so quietly that not a lot of people heard about it. I remember seeing a trailer for this movie a while back but never got a chance to watch it until now. I liked the premise of the movie and was startled at how much substance this movie had in the end.

The movie starts off with this small family. The main protagonist in this movie is Old Dolio. You don't know that's her name until well into the middle of the movie though. She's a single child that is parented by a very odd couple. They all live in poverty trying to duck out of paying rent and figuring out ways to swindle people..

Old Dolio's father and mother are two of maybe the worst people you'll ever meet. They're con artists but probably the worst con artists you can find. This family will often swindle people to make ends meet and they're even willing to take advantage of the disadvantaged to get it to happen.

The irony of the whole situation is that the father believes that they are righteous people. He's against materialism and a conspiracy theorist. Technology and system rules are things he's totally against. It would kind of explain why the family is the way it is.

We later become even more shocked when we find out the age of Old Dolio. Throughout her life she's pretty much been treated as a pawn to her parents' schemes. After years of this, Old Dolio is of course traumatized and scarred. She has reactions to people as if she's been abused and really she has been abused mentally over the years as she's been doing this for so long.

This movie really picks up when the family meets a girl on a plane. This new girl comes into the family's life with open arms by Old Dolio's parents. It's quite odd and Old Dolio comes to realize the affections that she's been neglected over the years. The pain and trauma of years of torment come flooding in. She's frustrated, angry and doesn't know what to do.

That's where the real meat of this movie comes into play. We start to dive into Old Dolio's psyche and see how she ticks. It's intense, awkward and intriguing. AT this point the filmmaker starts to get us to wonder what's really going to happen. Is Old Dolio going to finally emancipate herself from her parents? How much will it take for her to break free from the shackles of her parents?

In some ways I can see how this overly exaggerated situation is still relatable to everyone of us. We're all shackled to someone or something that prevents us from doing things. How much will we take before we break free? Old Dolio's devotion to her parents are quite understandable as many of us hold the same devotion to our own parents. We can see the struggles and conflict going on in her head because some of us have gone through the same things.

This question of will she or won't she builds up closer to the end and keeps us as the audience guessing. It soon becomes a mystery of a cliffhanger that we all want to figure out. When the truth came out I was both relieved and understanding of what had happened.

Not everyone will be able to handle this movie. It is definitely an uncomfortable viewing at some points. Luckily Old Dolio's character has a lot of charm that makes you want to root for her. She keeps getting beaten down and you want her to succeed. Unfortunately she goes through so much that you want to turn your head away. Like a bad accident you sort of can't turn away.

Overall, I actually enjoyed this movie. I thought it has a lot of themes that many of us can relate to. Duty and existentialism are the hot topics that they discuss a lot about in this movie. There haven't been a lot of films lately that have talked about these very same issues. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. You'll have to be in relaxing mood to watch and enjoy this movie though.
