My Review of "Irresistible"

This movie went the opposite direction than I thought it would.

Irresistible is a political comedy that was released in 2020. There wasn't a lot of fanfare for this movie as it came out during the whole lockdown. It's too bad because I think this movie might surprise some people. They have a lot of messages in this movie that were pretty interesting and very truthful in a way.

The movie starts off with these bitter rival political campaign managers. Gary is the campaign manager that we focus in on. In this story the Democrats are losing out in the polls and he wants to create a more inclusiveness to their party. It seems as though they've lost touch with the rest of America so they're trying to win votes he wants to push a more rural angle.

In comes this viral video of a rural farmer named Jack. He's gruff and stereotypical of what we all envision farmers to be. In the video he makes a moving speech that defends immigrants of his small town. When Gary gets a hold of this video he immediately thinks that he has the perfect Democratic candidate.

So the whole story is basically him trying to win the hearts of a small rural town in Wisconsin. A lot of the jokes stem from our own prejudices of how we perceive people in big cities and small towns. Gary is basically a very typical campaign manager from Washington and the citizens of the town are fit a very stereotypical perception as well.

Those interactions are funny enough but would get old fast. To up the ante they added Gary's rival campaign manager Faith. She's pretty much like Gary but for the Conservatives. When these two get together it almost becomes a cartoon because of their outlandish behavior towards one another. It's quite funny and add into the mix the town citizens get to witness their childish antics.

All this wouldn't work if it wasn't for the fantastic cast that they had for this movie. They all played their parts very well because in some ways they're playing people that are pretending to be something that they aren't.

They also had interesting messages about the amount of money that is funneled into these political campaigns when regular citizens of the country desperately need the money. They satirize the fact that money isn't distributed properly in America. There are problems but we focus the the money on things that we shouldn't. I found that there was a lot of truth to that.

The movie kind of flips itself right at the end and I could sort of see it but in the beginning I wouldn't have thought it was going to happen. We see small clues throughout the movie that foreshadow things to come. It is a welcome change and I thought it was a pretty smart way to end the movie. They kind of flipped a lot of our preconceived notions of how movies are supposed to go and had fun with it. This movie is quite aware of itself and it showed.

Overall, I had a really good time with this movie. For those that see the trailer or just read the description of the movie, I know it doesn't sound interesting. I can reassure you that there's more to this movie than meets the eye. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It is worthy of watching and I would probably let others know about it. When watching this movie try not to think of it as Democrats vs Republicans because at its heart it isn't about that at all. It satirizes the process that goes into political campaigns.
