My Review of "Guest House"

There's an element of nostalgia but in the wrong way. This movie came out 20 years too late.

Guest House is a 2020 comedy and I'm not entirely sure how they got it greenlit. There's some old school comedy that I recognize from the 90's but it's not exactly a great thing. Some of the jokes in this movie are truly outdated and needed to be reread before someone approved them. How did any studio think this would be okay to release to the public? I was very close to not finishing this movie because of how bad it was. There was this thing inside of me thinking that it has to have at least one good moment but that moment never came.

This movie starts out with a montage of how our main characters first meet. I guess this is during their college days and Sarah was going out with this other guy at the time. Blake was basically a party animal looking to have fun and by chance the two had met at a party. They've been together for a while and fast-forward to present time, the two are now looking to buy a place together.

They search around for a few places and then land on a fantastic property. It's a property that looks too good to be true and of course this being a comedy it was too good to be true. There so happens to be a party animal living in the guest room. The sales agent assures them that this guy Randy will be moving out of the place soon so they don't have to worry about it.

Unfortunately for them and us the viewers, this is not the case. Blake and Sarah decide to go ahead with the house purchase and deal with the pesky new house guest. Before long the two realize that this guy is worse than they had anticipated. He's doing drugs and having loud parties at night.

Sarah can't deal with it so she sends Blake to handle Randy. The problem with Blake is that he's kind of a pushover. He tries to convince Randy to calm down and find a new place but that doesn't go quite as well as he hoped. Randy sweet talks Blake and Blake being an idiot falls for the talks and gets high with Randy.

This happens more than once in the movie. It's kind of a throwback of yesteryears when we just think that it's okay to have that comically dumb character fall for things all the time. There's a few throwback comedy routines that happen in this movie that really need to be checked. It's kind of weird to see it in movies nowadays but there's a sense of homophobia sprinkled throughout the movie. A number of the scenes depict women in pretty demeaning ways. The nonchalant use of recreational drugs goes to the extremes in this movie that point to dangerous perceptions. There's even old played out jokes about marriage.

I remember a lot of these thought processes in movies back in the 90's and maybe this was greenlit because of the 90's nostalgia that's happening right now. Even Pauly Shore, an icon of the 90's stars in this movie. I almost forgot how they portray Pauly Shore in movies until I saw this movie. Don't get me wrong he's in some fun movies in the 90's that I'm probably going to check out again but I was hoping for a better character than this for him.

Overall, I was trying to root for this movie but I just couldn't after a while. There was so much hope that it would turn itself around but it never did. I really didn't like this movie and I don't suggest anyone check it out for their own sanity. I unfortunately have to give this movie a 2 out of 10. It is a major stinker that I highly suggest people stay away. There must be something wrong with the Netflix algorithms because this movie is quite popular at the present moment. Either there is a huge conspiracy or there really is a big market for these types of movies. If the later is true then we're in for a lot more of these types of movies... I hope that's not the case.
