My Review of 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters'

The eventual sequel to the 2014 Godzilla has come out. This is totally different from its predecessor.

I knew they'd make another Godzilla movie when they remade the 2014 Godzilla movie. Well, you can say that's pretty obvious since there were so many Japanese sequels and American movie companies would want to cash in on this sweet franchise. That isn't totally the case because the first movie was kind of a hit or miss movie.

The 2014 movie was a slow movie that tried to push the character development of each of the characters of the movie. Godzilla doesn't even show up until later in the movie. The monster is a mythical creature that no one knows anything about. It ended with a wink at the audience to stay tuned for more Godzilla.

Flash forward five years and we finally get our sequel which takes place a few years after the 2014 Godzilla incident. This movie radically changes tone because the whole world has been affected by the Godzilla event and there's no keeping it a secret like before.

In this movie, we don't have any of the former cast rejoining us except for Ken Watanabe as Dr. Serizawa and Godzilla. It's a whole new cast and I guess they cast it as well as they could. I found that there were a few cameos in there that didn't make sense. You know those cameos where you know the star but you're not sure why they're there other than to give the movie some face time? There's an obvious reason why Ziyi Zhang was cast in this movie. It was definitely to get the Chinese audience happy. Her character pretty much does nothing through the whole movie.

That's a bit of the problem in this movie though. A ton of people don't really do anything. They're going through the motions but I really couldn't connect to them. I'm not sure if they're not doing a good job or if the dialogue is to blame for this. The movie went in the right direction too.

Basically in this movie it's discovered the company Monarch has been hiding the fact that they know where a ton of the giant monsters lie dormant. They have facilities keeping them at bay. There's a coup within the company. These radicals believe that the monsters exist to bring order to the Earth. They believe that we've destroyed the Earth for too long and the monsters need to be let loose to rectify our sins on the Earth. Yeah, I know this sounds similar to the plot of many movies that believe overpopulation of humans is the prime evil of all Earth's woes.

So the monsters are let loose and crazy fights ensue. The big change from the first Godzilla movie and this movie is that Godzilla is front and center in this movie. I guess this was a huge complaint of the first movie. There are a ton of fights. It was pretty evident that the movie company took surveys from the first Godzilla audience and just okayed everything that they complained about. There are a ton of monster fights. Godzilla shows up immediately in the movie. It's all out action rather than exploring more of the human characters. Godzilla has multiple forms. There are flying monsters. They even gave Godzilla a love interest. Yeah, you heard me right.

I wanted to like this movie because yes they did address all of the issues that people had in the first movie but they just pandered like crazy. The characters are so wooden and one dimensional that it's not very entertaining to watch. It's a shame too because they had a decent cast that could have done much more for the film. Again I'm not sure if it's the way that the movie was written but there was no charisma in the characters at all. There was however a ton of shocked faces, panting and grief.

That's not to say that it isn't a beautiful movie. The special effects are absolutely amazing in this. They did so well in the CGI that the monsters seemed to blend right into the settings and it really seemed as though giant monsters were having epic titan clashes in the city. If that's what you're after by all means this movie is going to entertain the crap out of you.

I remember another movie that was similar in the sense that they relied on a ton of giant monster fights and that was Pacific Rim. I would say that Pacific Rim had less story than this movie but it was still way more entertaining to watch than this movie. At least the characters had character and charisma. I didn't get that same sense in this movie and ultimately that's where I think this movie fails.

Overall, I really enjoyed the fight scenes and there are tons of them but some of the expedition and exploration was a bit boring without any charisma in the characters. I had no empathy for any of the main characters when I knew I should have. I unfortunately have to give this movie a 5 out of 10. The movie was entertaining in 3D but they didn't utilize the 3D enough to say that the 3D version is even worth buying. Only CGI action fans and Godzilla die-hard fans need to watch this. Casual movie-goers can skip this one altogether.
