My Review of "Gemini Man"

A very interesting sci-fi action movie that a lot of people looked over.

Gemini Man is one of the last blockbuster movies that came out back in 2019. It made a big controversy when it was released at 48 frames per second in the theatres. Not a lot of people were too pleased with this but now I'm curious as to how it might have looked in that frame rate after streaming the movie.

This movie starts out with a thrilling assassination job by the main protagonist, Henry. He's pretty much the assassin in the world but after this assassination job he feels something is off. With older age he's starting to doubt the work he's done over the years. Up until now he's assumed that he's only been killing bad people. After so many kills he's started to have problems seeing himself in the mirror. Now at the ripe age of 51 he's decided that it's time to hang up his gun and enter the life of retirement.

Even during his first few days of retirement he's on his guard. I guess Henry has to have a habit of looking over his shoulder at all times. His job had to have conditioned him to do so after all these years. Everything starts to get a little murky when his old buddy invites him to his yacht.

His old buddy tells him that his last job didn't feel right because the guy that he killed wasn't necessarily a bad guy. We soon realize that Henry was absolutely right to be paranoid to be weary of his surroundings. The government is still spying on him even in retirement.

When the villains figure out that Henry was tipped off all hands are on deck. No one is safe around Henry. They want to eliminate all loose ends and that means anyone that had contact with Henry. It doesn't take long before Henry realizes this and he starts to warn everyone. Before long everyone is dead except for him and a rogue spy.

When the villains realize that Henry is still as deadly as ever they decide that they have to release project Gemini on Henry. As you'd probably guess from watching the trailers for this movie, project Gemini is the younger version of Henry.

I won't ruin the twists and the origins of Gemini but I would say it is a very interesting premise. This movie goes into a lot of philosophical questioning in a simplified sense so that it fits into a largely action film. I think that they slipped enough into this movie so that it allowed it to flow properly.

The pacing of this film was really nice. I felt that there was good action throughout the movie. There really wasn't that many low moments or scenes that dragged. It seemed as if every scene was pretty crucial to the film as if there was no wasted space at all. That's not easy to do when you're trying to tell the audience members so many different messages.

I liked the fact that there were aspects that differentiated the old and young versions of Henry. The older version was more patient and seasoned whereas the youthful version was much more energetic and naïve. You'd think that a younger version of Henry would have an obvious advantage seeing as a younger body would be able to beat out an older version of him. They made clever uses of different tactics from Henry to make everything seem a little more balanced.

As much as technology today has advanced I still found some of the special effects a little distracting in this movie. Some of the stuff seemed really good but there are times when the younger version of Henry looked obviously CGI. There are also the horrible cartoonish CGI action scenes where characters look like they're cartoons fighting. Still the action sequences do keep you at the edge of your seat even though they can at times look pretty bad.

Although they have a lot of questions regarding morality and the uses of different forms of technology it's nothing really new. A lot of the ideas seem so familiar that you can pretty much predict what's going to happen throughout the movie. If you're in this movie for action this wouldn't really matter to you as much. The problem is if you're in for a deeper movie I think that they diluted a lot of the philosophical moments so much that it won't really blow your mind.

Overall, I still enjoyed this movie. It's surprisingly good. The reason why I say that is because this movie was a big blockbuster movie yet no one really talks about it. For those that haven't seen it and are into action movies, I would say give it a shot. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It's a great time to be had, just don't expect your mind to be blown.
