My Review of "Game of Thrones: Season 7"

What a drop in quality! Some of this was a slog to go through.

Game of Thrones: Season 7 came out back in 2017. There was a lot of moving parts that ended off in season 6 to potentially keep this season shining but what we got was kind of a Hollywood version of what the series should be. Admittedly, it's the most beautiful that this show has ever been in terms of clarity and visual marvels but this isn't what got us into this series. There's many issues that really got under my nerves with this season.

This season is a shortened season. There are only 7 episodes as opposed the the usual 10. Though some of the episodes are extremely long so I don't know if it's really shortened. Some of the episodes feel more like long drawn out movies than TV episodes. A lot of it is focused on potential things that can happen.

The season starts off with Jon being the new king in the North but immediately goes off to Dragonstone to meet up with the dragon queen Daenerys. She's now got all the pieces to dominating kings landing but she has Tyrion in her ear so she doesn't burn the world down as she does it.

Just before she goes off to win her throne back Jon warns her that there's a bigger war going on. They have to fight the undead in the north or everyone is going to be a zombie. She of course doesn't believe him but then he convinces her to help him eventually.

In order to to fight these white walkers they have to mine dragon glass from Dragonstone for weapons and they need more people. They're convinced that they need the military from kings landing to help them fight off the undead. This means they have to align with Cersei and that's not going to be easy.

That's why they concoct this ridiculous plan to capture one white walker to bring to Cersei as proof that they have to work together in order to fight this new menace. Other than this we have the small politics going on in the north between Sansa, Arya and Little finger. That's about it for this season.

You'd think that a more focused story would make this season to become a more epic season. Instead it feels drawn out and lackluster. This whole plot to find a white walker to take back to Cersei is kind of ridiculous as well. I get it though. Daenerys doesn't want to lose her military strength by fighting the good fight so that she can never take the iron throne again.

They never played up the Lannister connection card where Daenerys loses confidence in Tyrion as he hasn't been effective and he's been colluding with his siblings to make the truce.

There's also a terrible timeline problem where people, places and things are just so conveniently placed for our characters that there's an air of disbelief throughout the runtime of the season. It really takes you out of the story when it took them so long to get to places and then this season they're there the next day. No they didn't suddenly invent airplanes or teleportation.

The list goes on. There's a sense of laziness throughout this season that I can't just put my finger on. The dialogue is extremely tongue and cheek as if it was part of a Marvel movie. It's quite off-brand and times when you see it. That's not to say they didn't try. I know there's a lot of work to get everything done for such a big production.

The visuals in this movie are amazing. It's never looked better. In fact, last season I thought they upped their game in terms of visual fidelity but it even looks better this season. I think they got new audio and visual equipment because this season is laser sharp and you can see every little detail in every shot. I guess this helped me appreciate the amount of detail they put into all of the art direction in this show.

Overall, I was very disappointed with this season. The last season was a sign that bad things were happening with this show and this season confirmed it. I didn't expect this season to be such a bore in certain areas. Yes there are some fun fight scenes but they're just fight scenes. It's a whole season culminating in hyping up their last and final season. I have to give this season a 6 out of 10.
