My Review of "Freaks: You're One of Us"

A small budget superhero movie that's enjoyable but not very innovative.

Freaks: You're One of Us is a small budget German movie that had come out this year. They put some nice twists to this movie but it's nothing I haven't seen before. I do appreciate the time and effort that they put into this movie. You can really tell that the makers of the movie really wanted to make something special.

This movie starts out with a very young version of our hero, Wendy. There's destruction at an elementary school and you can see kids crying and people in astonishment. Then they pan to this little girl listening to a cd player. A woman goes to her to comfort her and then we jump to today where Wendy is an adult.

We see that she has to take pills and goes to a psychologist. She's also has a nice little family with a loving husband and a young boy. They're lives seem to be happy but of course money is an issue for them. It doesn't seem to bother anyone that they're broke except for Wendy.

Wendy works at a fast food restaurant and she's been there for a good 3 years. Bills are piling up so it's finally time to really inquire about a promotion or at least a raise. She goes to her boss to ask for a promotion but the boss doesn't seem to like her and gives her excuses as to why she's not getting the promotion.

There's more instances where Wendy's blood starts to boil but she doesn't really do anything like being harassed by drunk men on the streets or her son being bullied by local bullies. She's obviously frustrated but can't really do anything about it. At least she feels powerless to do anything.

Next thing you know she's taking out the trash and meets this local homeless person. He starts telling her that she's just like him. Obviously it's a little absurd and she doesn't think much of it. He continually tries to convince her that she's got superpowers and that the pills that she takes everyday is pretty much repressing her powers.

It's sort of a Matrix thing where Wendy has to decide whether to take the pill or not to take the pill. You kind of know what she chooses. I mean if she continues to live the status quo how could there really be a movie full of content?

So she soon discovers that she and the homeless man aren't the only ones that have super powers. They plan on freeing people from the confines of this mental ward so that they can live freely.

There's also a relationship with a character in the movie that kind of makes you reevaluate whether they really should be locked up. Does the rights of an individual outweigh the safety of millions? With these great powers that they discover there's obviously going to be some sort of abuse. It's power you have over other people like a cheat code to a game. People are obviously going to exploit them to their own advantages.

We know who we are and sometimes when power comes to the wrong person there are consequences to pay. It's too easy to forget that there are sociopaths that walk among us and if they get a taste of superpowers you never know what they're capable of.

This movie tries to be pretty philosophical with a ton of questions about power but I think we've kind of seen a lot of these questions play out in other superhero movies already. There wasn't really anything I haven't seen in other movies but that doesn't make this movie boring to watch.

There are some pretty good performances throughout the movie. It's got an air of realism because I guess these are the first people that really discover that there's such a thing a superpowers. You do still root for Wendy throughout the movie despite any of her misguided decisions.

Overall, this movie is still enjoyable despite being kind of done already. For people that like superhero movies I would say this is right up your alley. There's nothing really new but it's got the usual superhero movie formula and there is comfort in this. I would have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. I think there's some more that they could have done to make it a little different from all the superhero movies we've already seen. Again there's a level of comfort from watching this movie because it's formulaic.
