My Review of "Extra Ordinary"

A sweet British comedy about a woman with powers to talk to the dead.

Extra Ordinary is a movie that kind of came out of nowhere for me. I've been a fan of Shaun of the Dead for a long time and I definitely noticed similar comedy styles in this movie. Well that's to be expected as they're both British comedies and I love British comedies. They have a sense of humor that is innocent and absurd at the same time.

This movie starts off with the main character Rose with her sister at a junction in rural Ireland. They're paying respects to their father who I guess passed away there. Rose blames herself for the death of her father and has this heavy burden on her throughout her life. This is one of the things that will get revealed later on in the movie but it's a recurring theme for her motivations.

Now Rose is a driving instructor and seems to be living a really demure life in this rural neighborhood where everyone knows everyone. Her father had been some sort of medium that talked to the dead or something. We soon find out that Rose also has the gift but refuses to use her gifts anymore. Her neighbors have been filling her answering machine with pleads of help but to no avail.

Then we jump to the supporting character Martin. It's hilarious that his name is Martin and his last name is Martin. There's a lot of nuanced jokes spread throughout the movie like this. He's definitely haunted by his late wife. It's absolutely obvious because of all the craziness that happens in his house and he seems to be able to communicate with her as well. The problem is that he has no backbone to fight back with her even though she's abusive to him.

Martin's daughter has had enough of her late mom's hauntings and gives her dad an ultimatum of getting rid of her late mom's ghost or she is going to leave the house. So Martin has no other choice but to entertain the option of calling Rose to see if she can exorcise his home.

All the while there is a main villain who is basically trying to become a big pop star again by making a deal with the devil. His deal requires the sacrifice of a virgin and so he's off trying to find an appropriate sacrifice for his deal with the devil.

This movie is pretty predictable but it's not about the predictability of the movie that makes you love this movie. It's really about the characters and the way these actors portray these characters. Each of the characters are so innocent and loveable that you can't help but love them. Even the evil villain has some likable qualities despite being a wretched person.

That British humor is in full force in this movie as well. They play off absolute absurdity into normality in the movie that made me laugh so hard. Practicality is the norm for the characters in this movie and you'll see how they use practicality as a comedy tool in this movie. It's much like the easiest way to get to a point is a straight line but in this movie sometimes that straight line is utterly ridiculous and there's so much funny to it.

Overall, I would say that this was a definite sleeper hit for me. I loved this movie from start to finish and I think a lot of people should really check this movie out. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10 because of its entertainment factor. If you have a chance, give this movie a shot. You won't regret it.
