My Review of "Enter The Fat Dragon"

I really wanted to like this movie but I kind of got confused as to what their focus was.

Enter the Fat Dragon is a movie that came out in 2020 that stars Donnie Yen. I really liked the concept of the movie but in the end I think they have a bit of an identity crisis. At certain points I thought maybe Donnie Yen wants to become the next Jackie Chan but he doesn't really need to. It does have it's own identity but it's heavily inspired by a lot of other movies.

This movie starts off with the main character Fallon. He's a good hearted super cop in Hong Kong but he doesn't really take his surroundings into consideration. This lack of attention pretty much gets him in trouble all the time. He doesn't consider how many people that might actually get affected by his rash decisions to apprehend criminals.

One day he has this horrible day where his rash decisions kind of have a domino effect that don't end up in his favor. He's about to marry this beautiful actress by the name of Chloe. All she wants is for Fallon to be there for her on their special day but as we know super cops have to super cop.

Of course on the day they're supposed to do their special wedding pictures there's a bank robbery and Fallon puts it upon himself to save everyone. He's confident in his abilities so he does some crazy things in order to apprehend these criminals. There's a huge well choreographed fight scene that involves a van on the highway. Eventually this van ends up almost killing a really high ranking officer.

The pettiness of the ranking officer consequently demotes Fallon to the basement of the facility. It's shown that pretty much everyone loves the fact that Fallon is demoted to the basement because he's been too stringent on them in terms of police work.

As Fallon missed his wedding pictures because of his super cop ways Fallon also loses his fiancé. Chloe wants nothing to do with him because he seems to value his job more than her. So Fallon is pretty much put at rock bottom where he's lost the love of his life and the career that he's worked so hard for.

He's placed in the basement and there he lives a sedentary life and starts to gain a ton of weight. It's not like he doesn't want to get back into the action. There's still tons of ambition in him but he pretty much follows his orders when he's given them.

Eventually when time has elapsed and he's pretty overweight his friend finally gets him out of the basement to help escort a criminal back to Japan. The problem is that the prisoner that he's escorting back to Japan has a lot of enemies in Japan.

That's pretty much where the movie really starts. There's a few jokes at the fact that Fallon has gained weight but he seems to be comfortable with the weight that he's at. He's surprisingly agile and fast even though he's a heavier set person. There is some mention of how he could have been better if he wasn't so heavy but for the most part it really isn't too much of an issue for him to be doing flips and kicks against his enemies.

I do like that about this movie. It talks about how being big doesn't necessarily mean that you're useless. In fact he was more of a hero as a heavy set person than he was when he was his thinner self. You do have sympathy for him as his situation is pretty bad but then again you kind of question the way the writers had written out the other characters.

Chloe seems to be a self absorbed actress that really needs a reality check. Her character may be grating to some. I know it was for me because she epitomized the term entitled. At all times Fallon would agree to her every whim and continued to help her with her illusions of grandeur. Her character really got on my nerves a lot and I'm sure that a lot of you will think the same.

A lot of the characters were very cartoonish and it felt like the movie kind of lost its identity because of the exaggerations of these characters. I understand it's a comedy but some of the comedy that they have in this movie really affected the feel of this movie.

Even Fallon's character seemed like some sort of Jackie Chan character where he would often add comedy to the choreographed fights which again I understand because it's a comedy. The thing is that at times they were able to make Fallon seem like a pretty badass character. They mixed the comedy with the badass scenes and it was at times tonally weird. I kind of preferred that they kept him a badass but that's just me.

There's still some enjoyment in this movie though. I thought the last fight scene was utterly spectacular. It was extremely well done and you won't be sorry for watching it through to the end just because it's that good. Unfortunately the majority of the movie feels very hokey and inconsistent. I ended up scratching my head for most of the movie.

There are some pretty funny scenes in the movie that pay homage to some of Donnie Yen's famous scenes in his career. They were able to implement them seamlessly into the movie. I thought it was a brilliant move on their part to make these homages.

Overall, I was still able to enjoy this movie but not to the point that I thought I was going to enjoy it. I would say this is something you would watch in passing rather than going out and trying to find this movie. I have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. If there is nothing out there I would say okay check it out.
