My Review of "Cobra Kai: Season 2"

After a spectacular first season I couldn't wait to check this season out.

Cobra Kai: Season 2 starts off right after the very well made first season left off. I was hesitant to watch the first season of the series but after watching it I was totally hooked and decided to binge watch this second season. After checking this season out I have to say there were some directional changes that I wasn't too happy to see but for the most part it kept with the essence of the first season.

The first season revolved around the re-introduction of Daniel and Johnny. The main characters of the series based off of the Karate Kid movie of the past. It was a faithful adaptation of what would have happened 34 years after the events of the movie.

This TV series wanted to push the next generation of characters. We got introduced to Miguel who is Johnny's neighbor who convinces him to start Cobra Kai karate dojo up again.

We also got introduced to Samantha who is the daughter of Daniel. Miguel and Samantha had a thing for one another and things kind of turned for the worst in the first season. That's when they brought in Johnny's estranged son Robby.

Robby wants nothing to do with Johnny. Somehow he falls on the footstep of Daniel and basically Daniel takes him in as if he's his own son. Pretty soon Daniel starts teaching Robby the ways of Miyagi-do which is the form of karate that Daniel learned from Mr. Miyagi.

The first season ended with Miguel besting Robby in the All Valley Karate championships. The turn of events happened pretty much similar to the way they happened in the original movie but this time Cobra Kai wins.

Johnny learns his lesson at the end of the season realizing that he can't be teaching his kids to be dishonorable and fight dirty. That is just when Johnny's original sensei Kreese shows up again.

In this season we see a big change of direction. They push the younger generation and kind of push away from the Johnny storyline in this season. The problem with this is that originally this was Johnny's story however I understand why they're doing this.

You see Johnny's storyline kind of finished his arc by the end of the first season when he learned that he could be redeemed and learn from his mistakes. I felt that they could have pushed this angle further in the second season but they decided not to. They wanted to push the Kreese angle instead.

Kreese obviously has his own angle towards this whole thing and since Johnny learned that everyone deserves a second chance they gave Kreese an in. I just find that in this season there were too many obvious deceptions and everything was more black and white rather than the more ambiguousness of the first season.

The characters are starting to become more obviously villains or heroes in this season and it sucks because they simply become one dimensional characters. This simplification of the season isn't only the problem. I found that there are a lot of convenient plot points and dumb decisions being made to keep the story going in this season.

More often than not there are a number of confrontations that don't have much conversations involved. One party does something that pushes another party and they see red and react. There's no sense of evaluating the situation at all or even trying to understand what had happened at all.

There was even a plot point where Miyagi-do dojo gets vandalized and Daniel comes to Johnny to get some answers. Daniel tries to get to the bottom of it but there's no resolution at the end of it. It's like that whole plot point was meaningless but to build tension between the warring dojos.

It's also quite irresponsible for them to have Johnny in so many drunk driving situations as if drunk driving is an okay thing to do. There are countless scenes of this guy getting drunk and driving around as if it was a normal way to drive.

There core story is still there though. It still follows through the basics of what the first season consisted of but they're starting to lose their focus. I'm kind of afraid of for the third season but this season ends off on a cliffhanger that makes me want to watch at least what happens.

Overall, I was able to enjoy this TV series but I'm afraid that this series might be losing its core elements of what made it so special in the first place. I loved the first season and unfortunately I thought this season was pushing closer to an angsty teen drama. I have to give this season a 6.5 out of 10. I hope the third season is able to redeem itself.
