My Review of "Calvin Harris: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2"

This is a summer anthem for those that go to parties and chilling at the pool or beach.

Calvin Harris: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 has recently been released. The album is a nice sequel to the first Vol. 1. If you're familiar with the type of songs with Vol. 1 you will be right at home with Vol. 2. Nothing has really made this album that much different from Vol. 1 but that's not necessarily a bad thing either. You know what you're going to get into and you'll be satisfied with the results.

The album starts with a bit of an intro song. It's to get you in the mood and kind of acclimatizes you for what's to come if you're not familiar with the Funk Wav Bounces. What's to come are a compilations of a bunch of songs that are melodically top 40s.

Each one of these songs will have at least one star guest feature. They will most likely do the singing or the rapping to the background music that Calvin Harris has provided. In some ways it feels like Calvin created the song and then tells his guest to create lyrics for it. The voice work goes with the music for the most part. There are times when a rapper will know where to hit the one but goes off a bit for the rest of the count.

The lyrics aren't going to knock your socks off. Again these are songs that are designed to listen to while you're just sun bathing in the sun or monotonously working out. They're not supposed to be overly complicated and that's one of the charms to this album.

This album tries to be more about the melodic music than having to overthink things while you're doing whatever you're doing. I can see a lot of people going on jogs and walks listening to this. There are a few that I can tell were made to be summer anthems. Perhaps you'll hear them on the radio at some point.

Generally the lyrics are about wooing some love interest, having a good time and on the odd occasion expressing how great they are. All of it pretty syrupy and never really offensive. It's ignorance at it's blissful best. There are one or two songs where the lyrics do add a little extra umph to the song. You'll tap while reciting the easy to remember lyrics.

Those that have heard the previous album will be right at home with this one. It's nothing extremely different from the first just different types of beats. There is the same reminiscent vibe and feel from the first in this sophomore album. Although it is interesting to note that despite having the same vibe and feel the beats do have quite a bit of a twist that you can tell there was some sort of change in music trends from then until now. It's subtle but you can hear it.

I really enjoyed listening to this album the first time I heard it. There are a few songs that they do play over the radio and streaming sources a lot. Those songs may get a bit old fast because of the play they get over the world and you can't escape them. Still it's a good time if you haven't heard any of the songs before.

Overall, I had a good time but I don't think I could listen to this album for too many repeats without getting a little bored. For first time listeners it's a must as it's a very fun album. I think i can repeat this album probably a handful more times before I want to go to the next. That's why I have to give this album a 6.5 out of 10. I can't wait to hear volume 3 before the radio ruins it for me.
