My Review of "Black Friday"

A really low budget holiday horror film that I think B-movie fans will be able to enjoy.

Black Friday is a movie you probably never heard of. That's for good reason. It's a really low budget movie that came out in 2021. Despite it's low production value there are a number of highlights to this movie that you probably won't expect.

The movie starts off innocently enough as you can tell the movie is aware of what kind of movie it is. There's some sort of meteor shower and some weird alien goop is flying into the Earth's atmosphere. Some of the goop eventually lands on Earth.

In this case the goop has landed inside a huge toy store and it so happens to be American Thanksgiving. Employees at the store are working hard to set the store up because Black Friday is about to begin in a few hours.

As everyone is stocking shelves and cleaning up one of the employees notices the goop on the floor. He soon discovers that it's not just ordinary goop. It's some sort of alien lifeform! Before he can run away the goop takes over and I guess absorbs him or kills him.

Meanwhile the rest of the employees are oblivious of this incident as they're busy doing their own work. As things continue throughout the day, the situation gets worse and worse.

That's about as much I can tell you before giving everything away. I know it's a horror movie but there aren't many scary scenes. There's one or two jump scares but they're totally harmless. What this movie does excel at is some of the quirkiness and comedy in between the horror.

I can see how some people that like movies like Shaun of the Dead would be able to appreciate this movie. As there are a few elements of that movie in here. Don't get me wrong this is a movie that can stand on its own though.

I was actually surprised at the fact that they were able to cast some bigger stars in this movie. Maybe they just liked the premise of the movie and wanted to be involved because it is a pretty fun movie.

The characters are decently developed and each of the cast does a pretty adequate job in portraying their characters. I felt that everything gelled very well.

I even liked some of the art direction that they went with. Some of the alien costume designs were a surprise because I didn't think a low budget movie would be able to afford such talent. Then again the special effects are very uneven. I understand that the effects aren't going to be the best so for what it was wasn't too bad. You'll notice the movie will use clever camera angles and techniques to avoid or help the special effects that they used.

Most importantly the story was fun. I liked how they were still able to make social commentary on our reliance on capitalist society. They continuously make the similarities to the monsters and customers during Black Friday. As crazy as the day was with all these creatures the workers were more interested in the pay that they were promised for the day. It kind of puts perspective into what we value most in our lives today.

Overall, not everyone will love this movie. I was one that enjoyed it. I thought that it was clever and fun enough to enjoy. Despite the low production value they pulled off a pretty good movie. That's why I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It is something I would suggest to friends that don't mind watching weird and quirky movies.
