My Review of "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"

This used to be one of my favorite comedies when it first came out. You have to be in a certain mood to really appreciate it.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy came out back in 2004. That was a crazy decade full of memorable comedies. It was quite a feat at the time to be singled out with so many great comedies at the time. This movie was able to shine outside of those comedies. In fact, it was probably one of my favorites when it first came out. Now nearly 20 years later I wanted to see if this movie stood the test of time.

The movie starts out with the introduction of Ron Burgundy and his friends. They all so happen to work as the newscast of Channel 4 news in San Diego. Together they are the top rated news show in their city. I love how they make them such a big deal. This movie does a lot of this throughout the movie.

They will make small little things and make huge deals out of each of them. Something as mundane as local news gets to be this big sexy showcase for this movie. Throughout the movie they also do go overboard with some of the theatrics and antics that the hilarious cast go through. These antics are so outrageous you definitely need to be in a certain mode of thought in order to process it. The jokes aren't for everyone but if you're in the right mood these jokes can really knock you off your feet.

As this movie takes place sometime in the 70s, we see changes in society that don't really sit well with the cast. Namely, they want to add a female news reporter to the team, Veronica. Today we think this is utterly absurd but women did have to go through a ton of trials and tribulations to get into the workforce and some still struggle today. This movie makes light of this situation and satires at the preposterous attitudes we had in the past.

In some moments this movie feels like a really wacky sitcom television show. They focus more on the relationships between Ron and his friends while Veronica kind of creates a wedge into their friendships. At times they can act quite childish and innocent. In other moments they play off very absurdly wild moments as if it was just another regular day for them.

This fine balance of wacky and straight delivery hilariously threw me for a loop everytime they did it. The characters also have such a wide range of absurdity. I'm surprised that they work so well with one another but they somehow pull it off. It doesn't hurt that the entire caste of this movie are all legendary actors and actresses. Again this was in the early 2000s when these actors and actresses were starting to get their names known but you can see their brilliance in this movie already.

Much of this movie leans into our main character Ron who is played by the legendary Will Ferrell. This is probably the movie that really cemented him as an A list comedic actor. He does all of his signature angles in this movie and they're done perfectly.

Seeing this so many years later, I realized that this movie is made for a targeted group and at the time I was the demographic. After so many decades some of the luster has dimmed a little. I still find this movie quite funny but I sometimes confuse my enjoyment for nostalgia and actual comedy.

Overall, I still had a really good time with this movie despite my confusion. There are still genuinely funny moments in this movie but again you really have to be in the right mode of thought to get through it. Not everyone will find this funny but luckily I was still able to enjoy it. I will have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10.
