My Review of "American Underdog"

An inspirational true story of a guy that had a pretty fantastic support group.

American Underdog is a biographical movie based on the life of Kurt Warner. For those that don't follow the National Football League, Kurt Warner is an American football player that didn't really get to live his dream until later on in his life. I remember his Superbowl win years ago but I didn't know they'd make a whole movie out of it. Then again why not?

The movie starts off with a narration from the actor that plays Kurt Warner. He's talking about how at an early age he already knew he wanted to be a football player. This is while we see a young Kurt Warner emulating his idol Joe Montana. The problem with being a professional football player is that you need to eat, breathe and sleep football. Even if football is in your veins you still have to compete against millions of other American's vying for the same spot. I guess it's like any other sport out there in the world.

Still Kurt is quite talented at what he does and he does very well even through his university years. Unfortunately for Kurt he wasn't ever drafted. He would continually try to get into the NFL and had one chance but kind of blew it. That wasn't part of the plan for him so he was kind of lost at this point in his life.

During this time he meets a woman named Brenda at a bar and is instantly smitten by her. Their romance is a bit rocky as she had some bad luck in her past that had scarred her deeply. Not only that she's got two kids that she has to take care of, one of them also has a disability. With Kurt's persistency, he's eventually wins her over.

Throughout this tumultuous time, Kurt never really loses sight of his goals. Despite the fact that Brenda doesn't like football at all she continues to encourage him to follow his dreams. This includes him going away at times while she takes care of the kids.

What I thought would be a story more about Kurt ends up more about the relationship between Kurt and Brenda. It's pretty obvious throughout the movie that if Kurt never had Brenda he would have probably broken down and quit his pursuit. This movie goes on about how having the right life partner in your life will help each of the individuals push themselves to new heights.

It's an absolutely great family film that the whole family can enjoy with a nice wholesome message in the end. I just kind of doubt how perfect Kurt is. This movie paints him as some sort of saint that was dealt a raw hand at a certain point in his life. He just overcame it with his fantastic support system and came to realize his dream in the end. Do people like Kurt really exist in life? If so my faith in humanity has been restored!

To further demonstrate that most of the events of this movie actually happened stay tuned at the end of the movie. They have a montage of the things that actually happened in real life and what had happened to Kurt and Brenda after Kurt's infamous football career. You'll be giving them a clap because these two really were two amazing people.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie even though it was a bit syrupy for my tastes. It's good wholesome fun that you can watch and just enjoy. Don't think too much and you'll have a wonderful time. Really if you're going to go watch this movie you kind of know what to expect at the end anyway so you shouldn't be surprised. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. I'd definitely recommend this to a few of my sports loving friends and friends looking for a heartwarming ending.
