My Review of "American Ninja Warrior Family Championship 2022"

I hope this series becomes more frequent. Although I'd like it to stay more amateur.

American Ninja Warrior Family Championship 2022 is the first of what will become a new series in the ANW TV series. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did with such a self contained episode but it was a welcome surprise. This comes right after the big main TV series so you wouldn't have expected the build up to be so big.

This is the first time I've ever seen this particular off shoot. ANW has had off shoots all the time. They've had the Junior version of the show then they also had the 1 on 1 competitions. They've even had country versus country competitions. I have to say this is the first time they created family competition. It's pretty fun too.

Each family consists of 3 members. They have to have male and female members in the family and they have to have at least some young competitors in the mix. So we mostly have parents and kids but we have some one offs with extended family members.

Most of the competitors in this mix have no prior ANW experience. Sure a lot of them have trained in the sport but they haven't seen the big stage and the big lights so it may be terrifying for them.

Oddly enough the families that contained the most experience were the ones that I wasn't really paying too much attention to. I was really rooting for the underdogs in this competition.

Most notable families include the Choi family. The patriarch of the family, Jimmy has had experience but his story really tears at you. He's fighting Parkinson's disease and this is probably the last ANW competition for him. I love his fight to win but oddly enough I loved his cousin trying to help his cause. She obviously has no experience at all at the competition or sport and she's giving it her all. I really commend her on her efforts and it was really great to see this family come together for each other like that.

Then we have the Heinrichs. The patriarch of the family, Shawn, has developed a bond with his two daughters through the sport. None of them have experience with the big stage but this doesn't stop them from becoming a surprise hit. They've all obviously train for the sport but they're such an unpredictable family. Each time each of the members does well you can't help but root for them.

I really hope that they could continue this series. Maybe make this sort of like a family feud type of deal. I'd love to continue to see amateur competitors that don't have experience because you don't know what they're capable of. Having normal people really try their best is sometimes the best thing about this show. This competition kind of reminds us of the roots of the show. This is when all of these fascinating people come together for the love of the sport and it's wonderful.

It kind of sucks that the competition is very uneven with some of the families having pretty good experience. They tend to blow the rest of the amateurs out of the water. Then again it kind of makes me as a viewer want to see those pro families get defeated by an amateur family.

Overall, I really liked this show. Hopefully a ton of people get to watch this and continue to push them to renew this concept. ANW has come a long way and in some ways the pros are making things look a little too easy. I've forgotten how difficult some of these obstacles really are until I see some of these folks face them for the first time. I have to give this show an 8.5 out of 10. Please continue making these please!
