My Review of "Ambulance"

A supercharged action movie about two unlikely brothers.

Ambulance is bit of an unexpected movie of 2022. Although it was a pretty high budget summer film there wasn't a lot of publicity about this movie. That's kind of unheard of for a Michael Bay movie but maybe we've been all Bay'ed out after all these years. We've come to know and expect a certain movie from him and this isn't that much different. That's not a bad thing either.

The movie starts out with the introduction of paramedics of course. Here we get to know Cam. She and her new partner are on pursuit to save a little girl from a horrific car accident. Obviously her green partner is freaking out but it's Cam's cool calm and collective attitude that gets everything done. She's obvious a veteran and good at her job. Still she's quite cold and people tend to shy away from her.

Then we get introduced to Will. He's a good guy in a bad situation. His wife is going through cancer and his marine insurance doesn't cover the experimental surgery he needs for his wife. Driven from the system he has to look for alternative ways of getting this much needed money.

That's when he goes to see his adoptive brother Danny. While Will is virtuous and good Danny is the polar opposite but the two love each other very much. They grew up together in the same household so you can't take that away from them. Danny unfortunately put all his cash into a big bank heist scheme but offers Will a cut in the profits if he joins in.

Desperate to make ends meet Will reluctantly agrees only because he knows how good Danny is at his work. Their dad was after all a very high profile bank robber himself.

This quick introduction is swiftly pushed through and we're right into the bank heist. I'm not sure why but Danny hires the idiots of all idiots to join his heist crew. They all immediately get taken out by this bank job gone wrong and it's up to Danny and Will to escape the FBI and SWAT.

When they get locked into a building by the authorities it just so happens that Cam's ambulance is in the building and that's their way out. So they hijack the ambulance and make a get away only to be chased for the whole day by the authorities.

It's a very simple concept and doesn't delineate too much from that simple story. That's a good thing because it then dives into the relationship with Danny and Will with all the calamity that ensues. There is also a ton of destruction and chaos on the screen at the same time.

Visually this movie is a tour de force. There are amazing angles and practical effects going on all the time. It can be a bit overstimulating for some but if you're here for a fun action movie it is everything you're asking for. You will see very little CGI which is a rare thing nowadays. You can tell that all the cars and explosions are real. They really do make the difference in making this movie feel that much cooler.

All the while I had no idea where they were going to go with this movie. Were they going to kill the main characters? How the heck are they going to escape the crazy situations that they keep getting into? That's part of the fun for this movie too. I love how it continues to elevate the scale and you don't know what's going to happen.

Also there's a ton of tongue in cheek jokes throughout this movie. Whether it's the Michael Bay movie references or the unhinged Danny trying figure out what to do next.

Overall, I had a great time with this movie. It looks spectacular and I think anyone looking for a fun popcorn action movie should really check this out. There's no deep storyline but that's not what you're going for with this type of movie anyways. You know what you're going to get yourself into and it does it well. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. I could rewatch this movie for fun.
