My Review of "Aladdin (1992)"

I watched the old animated title in 4k Blu-ray recently and it still holds up!

Aladdin the animated movie from 1992 is a classic Disney animated movie. It's so popular that they decided to make a live action remake in 2019. It's been so long and I don't know why it's taken me this long to finally see it. I remember that it was popular when I was a kid but I never got to watch it. It kind of slipped through the cracks for almost 30 years. Luckily, I finally got the chance to watch it.

It starts off with a hilarious sleazy street merchant. He's trying to sell you merchandise he has on the street. It doesn't seem anything works and then he presents to you this lamp. He mentions that this lamp has a crazy story to it and starts to recite his story in detail.

We then go into this flashback of a time with great majesty. There's a sultan that wants to wed his daughter to a prince. Well at least that's what the law states. His daughter Jasmine however is not complacent to the fact that she has to wed someone by a certain period of time. She doesn't like the feeling that her life is pre-determined and feels stuck in a life of solitude. She doesn't realize that she lives in a lap of luxury and wants to see the world for what it is.

Meanwhile the sultan's primary advisor Jafar is nefariously trying to overrule the sultan by obtaining a magic lamp hidden away in the desert. He's finally found the location of the lamp however only a person deemed the "diamond in the rough" would be able to pull the lamp from the depths of the desert.

We then jump to a young man of the streets by the name of Aladdin. He's a thief with a heart of gold. Jafar's magic has identified Aladdin to be the one who is able to whisk away the lamp from the treacherous depths of the dessert.

Through a whole slew of fun expositions Jafar finally gets Aladdin to find the lamp but it doesn't quite go the way Jafar intends it to. Aladdin instead gets locked into the desert and discovers himself that there is a genie in the lamp that will grant him three wishes.

What we get after this is a love story of the lengths Aladdin will go in order to win the heart of Jasmine while Jafar tries to achieve ultimate power. It's a fairly simple story but it has a lot of interesting side messages to tell kids.

One of the main themes of the movie is to remain to true to themselves. A lot of the story seemingly would have been resolved had everyone stayed true to themselves (namely Aladdin). I wonder if kids ever question the fact that if he was true to himself he would never get to meet Jasmine again if it wasn't for the lamp in the first place. The sultan would never allow him to meet with Jasmine if he didn't get the wish of being a prince in the first place.

Sometimes we all need that extra boost in our lives and in a way I think the new message for today would be to take opportunities when they're available. You can still be yourself but if opportunity knocks don't close the door. Instead you should embrace it and have confident in your own abilities.

A message was provided to parents with Jasmine's character. They want parents to know that maybe allow your kids to do whatever they want. Sometimes old traditions and rules will make them miserable and forever resent you in life. In a lot of ways I can see how these messages can make this movie relatable to a ton of people around the world no matter their culture.

This movie also has a few clever antics sprinkled throughout the movie and for the most part it is very funny. A lot of the jokes are of course childish prat falls and such but they work.

The animation makes me wish that Disney continued to make fully animated movies again. Watching in 4k you can see all of the details of the brush strokes and the color really pops out with HDR. It almost feels like the movie had come out in the theatres again in 2020. Everything about the look of this movie still holds up today and even more beautiful than ever.

Overall, I get why they made a live action version of this movie. It is a very good animated movie and something I should have checked out a long time ago. It's incredibly entertaining with a ton of charm to it as well. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. I'll wait a little longer until I watch the live action version because I need this animated movie simmer in my head a little longer.
