My Review of 'Adam Sandler 100% Fresh'

A great throwback to the old Adam Sandler that we grew to love, this is definitely a watch for Adam Sandler fans.

I know Adam Sandler has been getting a bad reputation from so many of his so called "fans" over the years. A few of his latest movies I admit weren't that great so a lot of his fans have forgotten how funny this guy can be. We also forget how diverse this guy is. The medium of his entertainment has changed in so many ways over the years. He did stand-up, songs, skits, and movies. I've always also had a great appreciation of how he kept his Saturday Night Live alumni as close friends and continued to work with them throughout his career. All of his work has a special family feel to them especially since I've grown up watching all of his stuff.

So when I heard of the Adam Sandler 100% Fresh special on Netflix, I wasn't sure what to make of it. It looked like he was returning to stand-up. He hasn't done stand-up in a while, has he? Well if he hasn't, it didn't show because he looked totally natural doing it. How could I have forgotten that this guy used to do stand-up for years? I guess this is him getting back to his roots.

The majority of this stand-up special consists of songs. A lot of Adam Sandler fans will remember he used to do this a lot. I have to say a lot of these songs are hilarious. He plays around with our expectations for a lot of the songs. I can tell there's going to be a punchline to every one of the songs but I didn't know when he was going to throw it at me. There's even a song where he plays on repetition of the song where it's funny because the song is doing the same exact thing but in different context. Sort of what the TV show Family Guy does.

You'd think a guy that is as successful as him would not be able to make relatable material to the everyday person but most of the songs are relatable and current. He sings about our everyday "first-world" struggles and on occasion sings about ridiculous absurd situations that are funny because they're so absurd. He goes on to use different genres like rap rock and new wave to sing his songs. At times he uses some special effects that are totally out there and unnecessary but as viewers it's pretty funny because we know how absurd it is. One of the more memorable songs is called "UFC ears." I was laughing hard for this one because it was so absurd and true at the same time.

There's a fun little cameo from one of the Saturday Night Live alumni that he's worked closely with throughout his career. There's also a very nice homage to the late great Chris Farley in there as well. This special was nice because even though he brought in the old wackiness that we all know and love about him he made this special personal and introspective. Those of us that have followed him throughout the years will get it. I hope those that haven't followed or know who he is get it too.

There are multiple nostalgic moments in this special but not so much that newcomers to his work won't understand it. There's a ton of material and and there's a lot of variety to the material. For those that are Adam Sandler fans, this is an obvious must see. You have to watch this special—it's a must 10 out of 10 for you. For those that aren't familiar with Adam Sandler's work, I would give this maybe a 7 out of 10. You won't understand the context to some of the stuff but I would say that you'll still have a great time watching it. There are tons of new material and the jokes are fun and simple so everyone should be able to enjoy them.
