My First Reactions of 'Spider-Man' (2002)
Detailing the Marvel movie I saw in theaters

If you're new to Vocal and have recently read at least one of my stories, I'm a nostalgic freak. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, because it's true. Let's take a trip back to the year 2002. There was a plethora of pop culture events that we enjoyed during that year: Avril Lavigne's hit "Complicated" was a breakout success, Halle Berry became the first Black actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, Ben Affleck was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and the infamous breakup of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. However, there was one pop culture event that would be the talk of movie buffs everywhere. That event was the release of Spider-Man. Based on the Marvel Comics featuring the titular character, it was released in theaters on May 3, 2002, and produced by Columbia Pictures (now Sony Pictures Entertainment). It starred Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco. The movie follows Peter Parker (Maguire) who gains abilities after being bitten by a spider and becomes Spider-Man. The movie grossed a total of $827 million at the box office. It is now the highest-grossing Sony superhero film. Spider-Man was released in 2024 to honor the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures. As of this writing, it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, proof that it's still relevant in pop culture. May 2027 will mark the 25th anniversary of the film's release. If a re-release of the film next year were to happen, I might wear a Spider-Man suit to mark this special milestone.
My First Impressions of Spider-Man
I'm the oldest of three siblings (youngest brother and sister) and I was the geekiest one in the family, due to my interests in video games, cartoons, and comic books. I still enjoy those things today and unapologetic about it. At the time of the movie's release, I was 14 years old and in the 7th grade. I went to go see it with my now estranged father and youngest brother. So, it was a guy's night out. Seeing Spider-Man in theaters was an eye-opening experience. Spider-Man's suit was the best thing that impressed me the most while watching the movie. I wish I had a suit like his and the scenes of him spinning his web felt like I was fighting bad guys and saving the city alongside with him. There wasn't one scene that I didn't dislike, except Uncle Ben dying. Also, it had some great humor and the entire movie in general got my undivided attention. Since reaching adulthood, I've only seen it a few more times. Spider-Man is a must-watch for everyone, especially for the much younger generation. If you love everything Marvel, then you'll enjoy this movie. I love Marvel movies and they're a thousand times more enjoyable than DC. Sorry not sorry. I'll post a link to the Spider-Man trailer via Rotten Tomatoes down below for your viewing pleasure.
Is Tobey Maguire your favorite actor that portrayed the web-slinging hero the best or do you have another actor you prefer? Also, if Spider-Man were to be re-released next year for its 25th anniversary, would you attend a screening of it in theaters? Sound off in the comments below.
